Microsoft begins to deploy Office 2019 for Windows and Mac

The preview period is over. Microsoft is generally making Office 2019 available as of today, September 24, for Windows and Mac.

Office 2019 is the successor to Office 2016. This is the "perpetual" version of the Microsoft Office suite, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project, Visio, Access, and Publisher. Microsoft released an overview of these applications to business customers in April 2018.

As Microsoft has already said, the Office 2019 feature list is a subset of what Office 365 ProPlus subscribers receive. The 2019 release adds some of the key Office features that Microsoft has already deployed to its Office 365 subscribers over the last three years.

The Office 2019 version will not be updated. it will only have security updates and fixes. With Office 2019, users will get Morph and Zoom for PowerPoint; new data analysis features for PowerPivot; Learning tools such as Read Aloud and Text Spacing for Word and Outlook; various security updates in the suite and more.

Office 2019 is the first to offer volume licensing, effective today. It will be available to other consumers and commercial customers in the coming weeks, officials said. And Project, Visio, Access, and Publisher are only available for Windows.

Microsoft plans to deploy 2019 versions of its local enterprise servers, including Exchange Server 2019, Skype for Business Server 2019, SharePoint Server 2019, and Project Server 2019 "in the coming weeks."

As a reminder, Office 2019 will only work on Windows 10, not Windows 7 / 8.1 and, in the case of server applications, Windows Server 2019. Microsoft has recently given some of its previously defined support deadlines for Office on various Windows variants. Office 2016 will continue to work with Office 365 core services until October 2023.
