An Australian teenager pleaded guilty to hacking Apple's system several times in a few months, but he will not be jailed. He said he did it because he was just a big fan of Apple.
The Melbourne The Age news agency reported that Apple had alerted the FBI after the company detected a violation. The authorities then informed the Australian Federal Police, who raided the teenager's home. The agents found 90 GB of sensitive files in a folder called "hacky hack hack".
A magistrate told the court that the teenager (unnamed for legal reasons) was operating a VPN for remote connection, according to Bloomberg. Apple reportedly blocked his access in November 2016, but he regained access last year.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Gizmodo, but in a statement to Bloomberg, Apple said that customers' personal data was not compromised.
The teen's lawyer said during his August appearance in the children's court that he had hacked Apple "because he was such a fan" of society, depending on age. Bloomberg reports that the teenager told the police that he had violated Apple's systems, in part, because he appreciated "just being in the company by pretending you were employees" and that activity was apparently addictive.
According to Bloomberg, the magistrate told the court that the teenager had shown remorse and cooperation with the police and that he would only have eight months of probation at the prison.
"Your offense is serious," said the magistrate to the teenager, according to Bloomberg. "He was born, sophisticated and a successful attack against the security of a large multinational company."
The teenager was 16 when he had access to the Apple system. Depending on the age, he is now 19 years old and has been accepted to a university where he plans to study criminology and cybersecurity.
