This has the legal word written everywhere. For years, Apple has created some key iPhone apps without installing them. You had to know that they existed and then deliberately download them yourself. This is probably a legacy of the fact that some of these apps have been paid for and now that they are free, but whatever the reason, it was painful.
Things are much better since the iPhone 6 and especially phones with greater storage capacity. Starting with the 64GB version of 6, Apple has installed iWork applications on larger iPhones. Today, he officially installs them on everything.
It's officially, however. In practice, you may not notice if you are already using an iPhone. Unless you choose to configure your iPhone XR, XS or XS Max as a new phone, whenever you have one, you bring your previous apps.
And it's not as if the time to choose to hide great apps is no longer for Apple: just try searching for the Siri Shortcuts app on your new phone.
Then, next to applications designed by Apple, you will find some essential applications, or categories of applications, so that each iPhone is ready for serious use.
About this shortcut app
It's a mystery why Apple would tout this app as one of the key new features of iOS 12 and not give it to you then. Go get it yourself from here.
To be fair, Shortcuts is a slightly schizophrenic feature for iOS 12 in that it is deeply integrated with Siri, whether you have this application or not. It's just that without it you are very limited as to what you can create a shortcut.
Specifically, you are limited to what Siri thinks is useful and then offers you. Many applications include features to help configure Siri shortcuts, but the only way to create one from scratch is to use this Apple app that you do not have .
You will take a long time to fully understand all the shortcuts that can do for you: you must first notice something that you do regularly and it takes several steps. Then you have to see how you can tell these shortcuts the shortcuts.
If you've used Workflow on iOS or something like Automator on Mac, you'll be familiar with it. If you have not done it, you will just have to experiment. Open the Shortcuts app and press Gallery lower right. This will show you the uses that other people have found for the feature and how they did it.

You can see why Apple may have abandoned the iWork apps when it was selling iPhones with only 8GB of storage space, which it did until it went down. iPhone 6 in 2014. Then you could easily say that it was not practical to run Pages, Numbers or Keynote on an iPhone with a small screen.
We did it, however, and especially with an external keyboard, we did it often. Now that we have the size and display quality of the iPhone X range, you can actually do all the work you did on a laptop.
Get them while you can
If you do not have them, download them all three the next time you use Wi-Fi. These are the apps that will help you get serious work when you're stuck without a MacBook.
Only you have to get them when you use Wi-Fi. Numbers, for example, is currently 476.7 MB, which is surprisingly small for a spreadsheet – but that's more than Apple will allow you to download on a cell. The cap is 150 MB, so you can not download either Pages (511 MB) or Keynote (691 MB).
The quirks of Apple
You can download Apple's Music Memos app, which only costs 102.2 MB. This is not essential for everyone: it's an application. which allows you to quickly record ideas for songs or other music by recording yourself a buzz or playing an instrument.
However, it is also an application that looks like iWork applications: made by Apple specifically for iPhones and free. It's more like Siri Shortcuts, however: it's still not installed with iOS.
If you are a musician, also check that GarageBand has been installed on your iPhone: if it is not there, you can get it now. Note that this is 1.7GB, however.
That's important and if you were to also grab hold of iMovie, you would need an additional 707.1 MB. Get iMovie, GarageBand, Music Memos and the trio iWork and you get 4.2 GB.
If you have them but you never launch them, you could save space on your iPhone. It's just that, like 4.2 GB, these are very productive applications.
They are also the ones who usually provide most people with most of the things they need to work. You can write any document you need in Pages and export it later to Word, as you wish. You can do any spreadsheet job and export to Excel,
You can do any presentation work in Keynote and then regret later exporting it to PowerPoint when you see how bad the Microsoft software is.
If it is to maximize the use of your iPhone, we would like Siri Shortcuts to be installed and the Stocks application to be the one you need to download.
Maximum use
There are applications that will show what your iPhone can do and there are others that you will enjoy. However, you must consider two more: two that we would cook in the iPhone if we could.
This is really two categories of applications and the first is a password manager. We did not say that it was exciting. What we said is that you have to look at them and you have to choose one and install it.
A password manager is a secure application that creates strong passwords for you and stores them as well. More and more, Safari is doing this, but a password management application can also contain your bank details, your credit cards and all the connection or license details of your application.
Security is a good thing, but the speed and ease of access to your personal data is another. Password managers can quickly connect to a site or pay for something with your credit card.
There are a few steps left, but your new iPhone comes with iOS 12, which has added a feature called AutoFill to help you use password managers more easily.
The top four password managers for iOS are 1Password, LastPass, Dashlane and Keeper.
Have the iPhone, will travel
You will not confine your iPhone to your home or office. It is a tool that you will take everywhere with you and, moreover, that you will use everywhere. Having this advanced technology on your screen, however, poses a security problem.
The Wi-Fi network of the airport you just joined could belong to the airline. However, it could belong to the suspect person who has been sitting for a long time in the Departures. Before doing anything on your phone that sends sensitive information such as connections and passwords via Wi-Fi, get a VPN.
It stands for virtual private network but it's a case where knowing what words are does not explain what it does. VPNs are often described instead as tunnels: they connect you from your iPhone to the site or service you want to use and they do it in a way that nobody can see.
Really, they encrypt all the data you send or receive over the Internet. Thus, you could use this fake airport Wi-Fi to check your online banking and stay safe.
A byproduct of this security is that VPNs also mask your position. For the site or service you use, you connect from one of the VPN company's servers all over the world.
This means that you can escape geographical restrictions. Suppose you are an American Hulu subscriber who is waiting for the new series of Veronica Mars but you are currently visiting the UK for an extended vacation. You pay Hulu, so you should be able to watch it, but as you are outside your home area, it will not work.
Unless you use a VPN.
This is not guaranteed: Netflix is now trying to identify and block traffic from a VPN, but it is a byproduct of tunneling technology, this is not a problem. is not the main goal.
