Super Mario Party It's not just a return to the classic game, bring back the format of the board game and give up the controversial car. This is the best entry in the Mario Party franchise for years but certainly, Nintendo has not set the bar very high. The last time that there had been a mid-decent Mario Party was back in 2007 with Mario Party 8 and to find a really great addition, you have to go back even further. Super Mario Party compensate for a part of that, finally.
The latest title of Nintendo Switch is not without flaws. In their effort to bring back Mario Party to the relevance Nintendo went to the sea. Super Mario Party spreads very thinly, adding too many superfluous modes. And unfortunately, Nintendo also failed to capitalize on the obvious in online multiplayer and Mario Party. Overall if Super Mario Party It is a celebration that deserves to be launched, especially with three friends for the trip (now metaphorical).

Super Mario Party should be seen as excuses for the absolute garbage that was Mario Party 9 and ten. The missed experience of inserting the four Mario Party players into the same car without autonomy is over. In the classic Mario Party mode, the four parties move around a colorful board game card, hang stars and play mini-games at the end of each round. It's glorious. The return of the board game and the enjoyable way it can be used to defeat opponents with a chance are pretty victorious. Super Mario Party goes further with the board game mechanism and adds new exciting strategy layers.
There are several small changes to the board game. Bowser and other villains are now playable characters and the cards are much smaller than before. The biggest change is in dice rolls. They are still completely random but Super Mario Party added a few rolls of dice by giving each playable character their own dice block. The choice of playable character now means more than just Mario favoritism of the franchise. There is a regular block of dice and, with the smaller cards, it has only 6 faces, unlike the previous 10, but with the character's dice blocks, this mechanic can become wacky and interesting.
For example, Shy Guy's die has 5 faces of 4 and 1 face of 0. This means that if a player wants to move only 4 squares on the board to go to a star or avoid a trap, it is better to use that of Shy Guy. dice, but there is a chance that they will not move at all. Likewise, Bowser has a 10 on his dice but also two faces where he can lose coins if he does not have the chance to touch them. These new special dice may seem strange, but they add in practice a surprising depth.
Special dice are not limited to playable characters. In a detention of Mario Party: Star Rush for the 3DS, it is now possible to recruit allies. These allies will lend their special dice and will even participate, in some mini-games, to a team. Allies are still computer controlled, but they can reverse a player's game. The allies seem to be able to overcomplicate the game, but they add just enough to not become too embarrassing or have a huge advantage. Although ridiculous RNG is part of the charm of Mario Party it stings when an allied computer wins a live mini-game, but it's a relatively minor hassle. Nintendo has nailed the dynamics of the board game with its first Mario Party on the Switch even if it is disappointing that there are only four boards to launch with no more to come (for the moment).
Minigames are another area where Super Mario Party succeeds … for the most part anyway. There are 80 minigames in all and they switch between standard controls and motion controls. It is impossible to play Super Mario Party with everything except a joy-con that prevents prevents Super Mario Party to be played in the switch's portable mode. A part of Super Mario PartyThe best games in this game use the joy-con's stellar movement and rumble control functions, making it an understandable sacrifice. Of course, the table mode is always available. There are still some chips in the mini-games department but Super Mario Party could simply have the most consistent overall collection in the series.
Everything else in Super Mario Party is a mixed bag. In an effort to live up to the Great As part of the title, Nintendo has added many new modes to the game and it would have been better to leave them alone. They are not all terrible though. For example, "River Survival" is a group of four players working together to go down a raft in the mountain rapids and playing cooperative mini-games is very interesting. The same goes for Partner Party, which is the standard mode of Mario Party, but in teams of two. Other modes have much less success.
The worst of the group is "Sound Stage". It is a collection of rhythm-based movement control mini-games, in which the player who wins the most mini-games is the winner. The mini games themselves are surprisingly solid with a good mix of rhythm and movement, but there is no reason for them to exist in their own section. It's a waste of space.
Sound Stage is not the only time Super Mario Party allows you to play mini games either. There is also the Mini-game mode which is a hit or a miss. The one and only highlight of the Mini-game mode is Square Off. In this case, the installation of the mini-games remains the main objective, but the real winner is chosen according to the territory on which a player flies on a square board (a mini-game is generally equivalent to a territory). All the rest in Mini-game mode takes up all the strategy of Mario Party for boring mini-game fights. This is especially true in Mariothon where the one who wins the most from a collection of five mini-games is crowned champion.
Mariothon being a bust spades because it's the one and only way Super Mario Party chose to make multiplayer available online. Super Mario Party is the first Mario Party include the game online, but there is no way to play a board game in mode. One could argue that commitment (a 10-turn board game can take up to an hour) would pose problem in online matchmaking, but no option is disappointing, especially the only mode available is Mariothon where minigames have small stakes. The online game even reduces the games available in Mariothon to only 10 random games, not the 80's. It's terrible.
There are other features in Super Mario Party like a dull solo campaign called Challenge Road, but playing standard game mode with computer opponents is a much more satisfying experience for a single player. There is also the Toad Games Room that can use two switches to play special mini-games. It's an interesting technical demonstration, but not much more than that. The bulk of Super Mario PartySuccesses and failures can be found in other modes. Overall, these benefits outweigh the disadvantages.
Super Mario Party is not perfect. He does not even supplant Mario Party 2 or Mario Party 4 like the best Mario Party game never. However, it becomes very close. Super Mario Party would have been stronger had he removed some of the additional game modes and put more emphasis on quality than on quantity. Toad's playroom or sound stage could easily have been exchanged for three to four new board game cards. As it is, Super Mario Party is a strong renaissance for what has become the red-haired son-in-law of Nintendo franchises. Hopefully, there will be many more awesome suites to build, starting from what he's doing well and ignoring what he's doing wrong.
