Chevrolet has received certification for its new 2.7L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with official fuel consumption numbers.
In the war for ever-increasing fuel economy in the US truck market, Chevrolet fought back against its rivals Ford and Ram with its new 2.7L turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder engine, replacing the 4.3-liter V6. L at basic fuel consumption. Although it seems that Chevy has prioritized power over efficiency for its replacement engine.
Standard on the LT and RST versions, the new 2.7 Turbo delivers 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque – impressive power. Fuel economy is slightly less impressive at 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg in the highway in 2WD configuration. Combined is a derisory 21 mpg.
Compared to the outgoing V6, the new turbo engine boasts a torque boost of 13%, a top city mileage and weighs 380 pounds less. This translates to a full second fastest at 60 mph at just 6.8 seconds. The maximum payload is 2,280 lbs, while the maximum towing capacity is 7,200 lbs.

However, the comparison begins to fall once you import from other truck manufacturers. Compared to the 2.7-liter V6 turbocharged EcoBoost Ford F-150, the Chevy turbo is a product of inferior quality. Ford's EcoBoost gets 20 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in total. The power is also superior, with the EcoBoost rated at 325 hp and 400 lb-ft.
Even compared to the basic 3.3L V6 F-150, the Ford gets better highway and better combined fuel consumption with 19 cities, 25 on the road and 22 in total. Although the Chevrolet exceeds Ford's base power, it produces 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
The Ram 1500 is also superior on the road and combined fuel economy, with 17 mpg in the city, 25 mpg in the highway and 21 mpg combined with its 3.6 L Pentastar V6. The Chevy Silverado is barely more powerful than the 1500 with a power of 305 hp.
Once Chevrolet replaces the 4.6L V6 on all trim levels, we'll be impressed. Until then, it's a good new engine, but it still does not beat Ford.
