The Google Pixels 3 and 3 XL did not offer a lot of material surprises, considering the endless flood of leaks in recent months, but the software was another story. Many new camera features were introduced during the Made by Google 2018 event, with a multitude of machine learning spells. Unfortunately for older Pixel owners, these new features will not all be offered by older phones. For your convenience, we have listed all the major software features that will be (and will not be) integrated with previous models.
As a non-liability, this list is subject to change. We talked to an event camera engineer and a Google representative later, and each time we were told that it was possible to have more features could come to Older pixels, depending on the circumstances. In many cases, however, these new features are related to understandable hardware changes that prevent porting to 2 or 2016 pixels.
Upcoming features for older pixels
Sometimes the software is just software, and old dogs phones can learn new tricks. Although all features of Pixel 3 are not compatible with older phones, we have checked with Google that the features below will come on old pixels.
Blur adjustable portrait
Like Apple and Samsung before them, you can change the degree of blur and focus of this blur on photos taken in Portrait mode with fake pixels with Pixel 3. With the good combo of recent APKs, the same feature works on the Pixel 2, and Google explicitly told us that this feature would be officially released on other pixels.
Night view
At Google's event, it was revealed that a new low-light enhanced Night Shot mode would be offered to Pixel 3 phones in November, and the examples provided by Google are staggering. Other Pixel phones have also been explicitly programmed to get the new mode, but no date has yet been provided. We also confirmed separately with Google that this feature would be available on older phones.
Gmail Smart Compose
Smart Compose arrived at Gmail earlier this year as an experimental feature, and keyboard shortcut suggestions for typing while typing should make all people familiar with tinkering in Bash or CMD smile. Smart Compose saves you time when entering e-mails by offering suggestions while reducing the time you spend writing messages. But until now, this feature was reserved for desktop computers.
In the 2018 Made by Google speech, it was said that Gmail 's Smart Compose feature was "Coming to Pixel First", with no apparent distinction between the old and the new. We were told explicitly that it would affect them all.
Playground
Playground is the new name for the Google AR Stickers app, which allows you to add many augmented reality models in your viewfinder. Although Pixel 3 is the first to come, Google says it will soon be on Pixel and Pixel 2016 2016.
Duplex
Duplex mode is an introverted dream. It allows you to make calls in a fully automated way through the Google Assistant. Scheduling an appointment or checking opening hours can be fully managed by the assistant at your request.
Pixel phones will have the new feature for the first time next month, city by city, during deployment, but if we rely on the phrasing of the announcement, it would seem that this is not limited not at all pixels, but that should end up making its way to other devices, too.
Call screen
In the same vein as Duplex, Google introduced a new call screening feature at the Pixel 3 event, hoping that this would give us better tools for individually fighting the scourge of telemarketers because US regulators do not can not (or will not). It allows you to have the assistant answer on your behalf, ask for a call, show you a transcript of the answer, and suggest ways to answer the call.
Call Screen is launched with Pixel 3 – at least in the United States – but "the whole family Pixel" will get it in November.
Exclusive features of Pixel 3
The latest pair of flagship products from Google contains a lot of new hardware, which means that all the software features mentioned in Made by Google 2018 will not necessarily be used by older phones. Although Google tells us that it will try to bring the most possible features to existing phones, this is only possible "in cases where there is no hardware dependency" . Like it or not, it means that some of these new features require improved hardware to work and that old pixels do not have it.
Pixel stand stuff
This should sound obvious, but I felt the need to emphasize this: since older pixels do not have wireless charging, they will not benefit from the Pixel Stand booth's experience. .
When it is installed on its wireless charging stand, the Pixel 3 can mimic some of the features of the main Google Home speaker and speakers equipped with a wizard. But since none of the other pixels have a wireless charge, we are told that the features will not be available for older pixels.
Wide angle selfies
For obvious hardware reasons, I hope that old pixels will not be able to enjoy the wide-angle selfies available on Pixels 3 and 3 XL. The wide-angle selfies are a courtesy – you guessed it – from this secondary wide-angle camera set on the front of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Pixels 2, 2XL and 2016 Pixels literally lack physical hardware to do it.
Top Shot
Top Shot looks pretty cool, allowing you to select the best shot from a series taken at the time of capture – just in case your timing is not correct. We know up to now three captures: you have to activate "Motion Photos" (since it is an extension of this same system), the quality of the alternative photos is reduced compared to that of the original photos, and this feature is exclusive to the new Pixel 3 and 3 XL.
This may be because the feature is based on the Pixel 3's Visual Core Pixel or it may require a difference in the physical sensor of the camera. Whatever the reason, we are told that older Pixel phones will not have Top Shot, according to current plans.
Photobooth mode
The Pixel 3 harnesses the power of machine learning to achieve its ultimate goal: fun facial recognition. In Photobooth mode, Google's latest flagship product is able to detect when to take a selfie based on your facial expression. But, like many other AI-based photo features, this one is only Pixel 3, at least for the moment.
Automatic movement
We should all have the habit of touching the viewfinder to select the focus and the exposure, but Motion Auto Focus takes this feature and makes it even more useful, using this selection as a guide to lock this object even when you move. Pets or energetic children who can no longer hold will not stay out of reach and if you want to follow a moving object, the Pixel 3 will do its best.
The only drawback of Motion Auto Focus is its position on this list. Google tells us that this feature is exclusive to Pixel 3.
Zoom Super Res
Again, Google has ignored the dual camera trend favored by most other OEMs, but that does not mean you can not get a good zoom of Pixels 3. A new feature called Super Res Zoom combines multiple exposures short to create a sharper and larger photo. This sounds a bit like a shimmer or lucky imagery, used in astrophotography to solve fine details through atmospheric interferences. Think of it as a kind of HDR in that it combines multiple exposures for a final image, but instead of looking for an improved dynamic range, it tries to solve the finer details for less than pixel interpolation.
Considering the steps to follow, Super Res Zoom could prove to be a very expensive procedure in terms of calculation, so that older equipment may not be enough to take advantage of it. Google tells us that Super Res Zoom is a feature reserved for pixels 3 only.
Goal Suggestions
The goal of Google is a familiar tool for most of us: it provides information about what we see through the camera of our phone. But the Pixel 3 includes a few more lens features built right into the camera's viewfinder, called Lens Suggestions. Its scope is a little more limited than that of the full version, recognizing items such as phone number and QR codes, but it also runs entirely on the device. And, we are told that it is an exclusive Pixel 3.
Switch to stripe hush
Back at I / O earlier this year, Google mentioned an incoming "Shush" mode for pixels, in which you can flip the phone face down to enter Do Not Disturb. We assumed it would be part of the digital well-being at the time of landing, but that was not the case. For some reason, Google has decided to make this Flip to Shhh feature exclusive to Pixel 3, at least for now.
This is what we know (for the moment) regarding the features that will or will not allow access to older pixels. Many who are not currently planning to do so seem to be exploiting either proprietary physical features in the new pixels or more critical hardware enhancements. Although it is possible that more people can make the cut, it is better to keep a brake on these expectations.
