If you want to make you feel old, forget about the fact that WIRED is 25 years old and realize that Nike designed the first Air Jordan in 1984 for NBA star Michael Jordan. Thirty-four years later, the original highs in red, black and white gave birth to their own subculture of sneakers.
This morning, at the WIRED25 festival in San Francisco, the famous designer Nike Tinker Hatfield was on stage with former WIRED editor Scott Dadich. He raised his feet in front of the packed crowd and took a look at a new generation of kicks, the latest Jordan running shoe.
For now it's called the GOAT.

(As a former athlete, Hatfield's professional shoe designs are widely respected, and the design of the third generation of Air Jordan by Hatfield is considered to be the main reason why Michael Jordan decided to stick to the mark, instead of jumping from one ship to the other.
"This is a running shoe for people who do not like to run," says Hatfield, explaining that he's designed it for top athletes, like 240-pound football linebackers. who must run as part of their training to stay aerobic. in shape, but that are not particularly fast, or that do not have a good shape and technique.
These new running shoes have additional stabilizing structures built into a black nylon lattice frame around the heel. The secret lies in a series of flippers on the back: the slowest runners usually land on the heel, said Hatfield, while the fastest sprinters land in the forefoot. This shoe offsets the dawdlers, who may be slowing down their training.
"It's about to be ready to be marketed, it's been shown to sellers, to retailers," Hatfield said. But, for the moment, he has no official name. So Hatfield calls it the GOAT race shoe for Michael Jordan, now known as the best player of all time on the NBA courts.
