Microsoft has announced that its customers will finally be able to remove more of the shortage of Windows 10 installations. In 2019.
While Redmond's insider users knew Redmond's latest efforts to stabilize their operating system, the Fast Ring and Skippy testers got their hands on a new version of the 2019 version of Windows 10 (also called 19H1).
Build 18262 has finally introduced the ability to uninstall a few more preinstalled Windows 10 applications (also called "inbox"), such as the little used 3D viewer, also called Mixed Reality Viewer. The following applications can also now be uninstalled:
- Calculator
- Calendar
- Groove Music
- Movies and TV
- 3D painting
- Cut and sketch
- Sticky notes
- Voice recorder
Users previously had to exercise their PowerShell muscles to remove anything that was on their system. While we at The reg are big fans of PowerShell (and all that is CLI), it seemed a little hard to force customers to use the command line or the registry editor to remove unwanted applications.
It is already possible to remove the likes of Solitaire, Skype and Weather. Unfortunately, it does not seem that the largesse of Microsoft is limited to making the Edge browser uninstallable.
The update also includes better visibility into potentially shaky applications in a high DPI environment and introduces a "Troubleshooting" feature, which uses diagnostic data extracted from the PC to suggest solutions to problems. This sounds suspiciously like these helpful sites that claim to spot problems on your platform and offer a solution, before spraying your operating system on multiple layers of malware. Just without the malware bit.
Significantly, the Windows Insider team warned that, as this is early in development, "the versions may contain bugs that could be painful for some". It seems unfortunate that they did not slap a similar warning on the version code. ®
