Fortnite’s Halloween event, Fortnitemares, has arrived and it appears to be the culmination of everything that’s happened with the game’s mystery Cube since it first showed up last season.
Cube Island, the former Loot Lake island and house that the Cube has been levitating around the map, has exploded, breaking into pieces that are floating above Loot (Leaky) Lake. You can still land on the pieces for a bit of loot, but that house is dead, and now the Cube itself is back to levitating above the lake unencumbered by the island. You can bounce on it and hover over it endlessly.
But the main attraction is what the Cube has brought with it. We thought the Cube was evil, and it turns out we were right. The Cube has now planted purple energy pillars at all the corrupted rune sites, pillars that are now spawning Cube monsters that are now a part of every game of “Fortnitemares” Fortnite that you’ll play.
The Cube monsters serve a few purposes:
- You can farm them for loot, as when killed they can drop items you can use in the game.
- You can kill them to complete a new set of challenges that have gone live, and if you complete all the Fortnite’s specific challenges during this event (there are four sets) you will unlock a glider
- You can use them as a distraction to kill other players. I have been killed already in a few games trying to fight Cube monsters because other players are smartly just sitting back and sniping at players farming them
So far, I’ve seen two types of Cube monsters, large and small. The “Brutes” hit hard and do not go down easy. The small ones are easier to take on, but there are a lot of them and they can mob you if you’re not careful. The new skin, Deadfire, will change its appearance the more Cube monsters/player you damage/kill, so that’s neat.
While the rune pillars are the primary source of Cube monsters in Fortnitemares, you should also find them scattered around the map in random locations. But if you’re trying to farm them specifically for challenges or gear, you should head to those areas where there will be a lot of monsters to murder. But again, beware of other players. Right now, because of this event just going live, the corrupted zones are probably the most dangerous places on the map, as you have to deal with both them and other players picking off the unaware.
The Cube monsters are an interesting concept, the first time we have seen PvE enemies in battle royale mode. Of course this isn’t that much of a stretch for Fortnite, given that the game was originally created as a zombie defense title, a portion of the game which still exists in the paid Save the World mode. While the Cube monsters are visually distinct from their Save the World counterparts, clearly they share a lot of AI similarities, so adding them probably wasn’t all that difficult, despite their new look.
I am currently trying to hunt down other potential map changes that have arrived with Fortnitemares, but so far the destruction of Cube island and the appears of Cube monsters is more than enough to keep players busy. This should be an interesting event to say the least, and I am curious to see how PvE zombies change battle royale for the foreseeable future. It’s certainly a big alteration, that’s for sure, and so far I’m not sure if I love it, but hey, I’ll give it more than an hour before I make up my mind.
Jump into Fortnitemares now and check all this out for yourself.
