A prototype for a pre-Wii version of the now iconic console motion controller appeared on Yahoo Auctions this weekend, eventually selling for a whopping 74,000 yen, or about $ 664.
The auction, spotted by Ars Technica after its conclusion, shows an approximate model of a rectangular Wii Remote, a removable Nunchuk controller and an external sensor bar designed to apparently work with a Nintendo GameCube (or less a kits) rather than its predecessor, the Nintendo Wii.
The Wii Remote itself is wired, unlike its final version, and features a familiar GameCube controller card at the end of this cord. Although visually similar to its final production cycle, the Nunchuk uses an Ethernet port to connect to the bottom of the Wii remote rather than the thicker connector chosen by Nintendo in the actual controller. The sensor bar, meanwhile, is significantly larger than that provided with the Wii and connects to the GameCube via its memory card slot.
The game developer, James Montagna, spoke about the authenticity of the prototype on Twitter, noting that he particularly remembered having seen the prototype comparable to the GameCube at the time when the Wii was still known as Nintendo Revolution, in development. He notes that this particular prototype borrows mussels from the Gameboy Advance SP for its control pad, button A and button B. Montagna has since shared a few others interesting images of prototypes of Wii controllers and images of the GameCube variant itself are available on the Twitter account of the buyer and on the auction list.
