If you do not need to regularly tow a train up a mountain, the Honda Ridgeline is a great truck. It can tow a few thousand pounds, has a decent size bed, and is comfortable and refined in town. It's also not the kind of truck you would think of turning into a desert runner. And yet, Honda did exactly that for SEMA this year with the concept of a reinforced open – air vehicle.

Believe it or not, the truck you see here is not based on any Honda side-by-side vehicles. It may look like a wildly overgrown Pioneer 1000, but it has actually started life as Ridgeline. And while this is still a concept, Honda says it was built using only existing components. The Ridgeline body and suspension have been clearly modified, but the doors have been removed from a standard Pioneer. The bed and tailgate, however, had to be custom built.

Without a roof to prevent bad weather, the cabin also needed a makeover. Honda used the Pioneer's steering wheel, then exchanged Civic Type R seats that were covered to make them waterproof and easy to water. The team also painted the other surfaces with a stronger material, able to better withstand the sun. Finally, Honda added some phone supports.

We do not expect Honda to actually build this thing, but we have to say, it's pretty cool. Maybe we can convince Honda to let us drive through Baja before retiring forever.
