A little-known company beat Samsung in the fore with the introduction of the world's first smartphone with a foldable screen.

The product is called FlexPai and comes from Royole Corporation, which unveiled the phone Wednesday in Beijing. It is built with a flexible screen that can bend the device as a wallet.

Royole calls the FlexPai a phone, but the device is also a tablet. Unfolded, the product has a 7.8-inch screen with a resolution of 1,920 by 1,440. It's also a bit heavy and weighs 0.70 lb (or double the weight of an iPhone X).

The provider claims that the Android device can bend more than 200,000 times. When you fold it, you basically get a phone with a screen on the front and back. However, the FlexPai does not fold completely flat and may not slip into your pocket.

You can see how it works in the video below. When you fold the phone, the device can readjust the display, although the transitions are not completely fluid.

The advanced display of the FlexPai will certainly distinguish it from other devices on the market. But the product is not cheap. the base model starts at $ 1,291. Completely upgraded, it will cost you $ 1,864.

Samsung plans to unveil its own foldable smartphone next week at the company's developer conference in San Francisco. The product would also have a large screen that can be folded in the same way as the FlexPai.

Although Royole is not a well-known brand in the technology sector, the company has been working for five years on flexible display technology. The company itself is headquartered in Fremont, Calif., But most of its employees are based in China, where it owns a factory in Shenzhen.

Royole told PCMag that he intended to sell the foldable phone in the United States, but he has not yet determined the exact date. In China, the product will be sold at the end of December.

The FlexPai is built with an unnamed Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series chip that has been clocked at 2.8 GHz. The base model comes with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a microSD card slot for more memory. It has two cameras, one at 20 megapixels, the other at 16MP. You can find the complete specifications here.

Royole is also a supplier of flexible displays, so it could power more foldable phone designs through other suppliers in China. Royole said his Shenzhen plant could build 50 million flexible screens a year.
