It seems that the OnePlus 6 is already able to use the new night mode of the company, thanks to the beta version of Android Pie 6. Naturally, it meant that I had to go into the dark streets to see if it really made a difference. difference for the night. camera photography capabilities. Please note that this is not strictly an in-depth camera test, but rather an indication of what to expect from your OnePlus 6.
But do not expect the quality level of Pixel 3 Night Sight or Mate 20 Pro Night Mode. The OnePlus Nightscape mode is not as good, but if the conditions are right, it can really improve your night shots.
That said, on the OnePlus 6 (we tested the use of the 6 because our evaluation unit 6T had not arrived yet), the results of Nightscape were sometimes very mixed. My first attempts were a bit jerky, but once I mastered the steady shots, it's easily the fastest night mode I've ever tested.
Let me also tell you that, without seeing any results, you will absolutely have to choose your fights with the Nightscape mode to obtain the best final result. Sometimes you'll see that the standard auto mode will produce a more usable and enjoyable image, without the device being in question. You can only work with what is available to you.
Night landscape in action
As you can clearly see on this street photo, Nightsight works by extending the exposure and increasing the overall clarity of the dark corners of the image. Even if it is not at the level of Huawei Mate 20 Pro or Pixel 3 Night Sight, you get a much more aesthetic result.
You may notice that it loses some sharpness, I saw that with some pictures where I probably did not quite hold hands as firm as possible.
Not all images have such dramatic changes, but once you've compared, you can understand why choosing to use Nightscape can make enough of a difference to a scene. The removal of all shadows makes a huge difference in image quality and the street lights are not as severe. I really like the color change, it's a great example of what Nightscape can do if the conditions are right.
The best thing about Nightscape is that it also works inside, even in dark but comfortable bars, where the lighting would be considered soft. Speaking of soft, you will see that Nightscape can sometimes make the images a little softer, but I do not argue at the expense of the image. This really adds warmth to the photo and it will be something you will like or do not like, depending on your preferences.
Nightscape is absolutely not perfect, take this picture from behind, for example – the guy who comes into shooting is a fuzzy mess. Forgetting this for a second, I do not think the mode actually improves the overall picture of this photo example. The lighting is dimmed and we noticed a loss of detail, which leaves us a picture of less good quality.
Learning Nightscape's strengths and weaknesses will be critical in determining when to best use the new camera feature. With something like this statue, all the details are much more pronounced when you use Nightscape and you can even see light clouds in the night sky.
Here is an example of what I would consider to be the major asset of Nightscape mode. Mixed shadows, a major light source, a central subject hidden in the shadows. Once you launch Nightscape, it really improves a lot of areas of the photo: you can see the text on the bike and even in the shop windows, you see more details about the manikin, including the shelves at the back -plan.
Last thoughts
Nightscape might not be pure killer feature, and it takes a bit of time to understand, including experiments to determine the best time to use the mode if you plan to take night shots. I have already tested it directly against the Huawei Mate 20 Pro Night Mode and it is not honest enough to be honest, but it does not make it a bad night mode, especially when the device costs less than half of what the Mate 20 Pro costs.
Personally, I would suggest using the feature sparingly. Any setting with strong lighting may whiten the image. You should rather use it when there are not too many light sources, or just take some pictures and then determine what is best for you – a bit like I did here.
I would like to know or see your own photos of Nightscape. Once you understand, you can really take great pictures. It's also really good that the OnePlus 6 benefits from the software features of the new OnePlus 6T. Do not expect exceptional photos in low light, expect a subtle boost and you will certainly not go disappointed.
