NVIDIA, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and the rest of the RTX family do not seem to stand back from the news. But, all the press is good press no? Maybe not always in this case. The RTX 2080 Ti seems to have problems staying alive and many variants of the floating RTX 2070 offer very different levels of performance under the same brand name.

Reports were published just before Halloween regarding an unusual amount of RTX 2080 Ti reported on the GeForce forums, indicating a fairly high number of dying cards for a new launch. Defects and DOA are not quite rare and occur at launch. With a GPU with such a matrix, it is quite possible that some pass through the quality assurance and come out in the wild, to be found by the unfortunate person at the time of l '. shipping to.

But this time, the figures seem, according to reports reported so far, that there is much more than normal. Consulting the GeForce forums reveals many discussions about RTX 2080 Ti, dead or dying, or about RMA stories gone wrong. The most common occurrence seems to be related to artifacts appearing on the screen that eventually fail and never recover. Artifacts as shown in the threads are usually the result of unstable memory overclocks, or simply poor memory, which has caused some finger pointing to the GDDR6 memory used on the RTX 2080 Ti. But it's a bit difficult to sell for some since the issues seem to be quite isolated from the RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition and not other variants and AIB cards that also carry the GDDR6 format.
Personally, I have a friend whose map died this morning even after being hit by massive artifacts, even on the desktop. In fact, I spent the last few days trying to confirm if ours was dying or not. Fortunately, our test card is correct because it has turned out to be nothing more than a bad M.2 drive, odd that it works fine with other cards. but the test bench is solid again.

On the GeForce forums, a user has compiled an open spreadsheet to document problematic cards with serial numbers, issues, and RMA status. The review of the spreadsheet indicates that the problems are quite similar.
NVIDIA released this statement to Digital Trends:
NVIDIA "works with users individually but we do not see bigger problems".

RTX 2070 has two faces?
So what about RTX 2070? Well, there are two. Both are essentially the same TU106 in the soul, but separated differently. The TU106-400A and the TU106-400 with the A at the end all have the same specifications except the base and boost frequency. The TU106-400A is the best drive that NVIDIA sells to AIB partner card manufacturers for their most premium versions, while the TU106-400 is the same result as these few "low cost" versions of the system. RTX 2070.
Paul of Paul's Hardware discovered that he was able to properly operate his TU106-400 chip, which clearly shows the value that overclockers who prefer to play the lottery could well value than to buy the best chips, to give his video a watch like it's really well done and just generally fun to watch here.
Meanwhile, Steve at Gamers Nexus discovered that there was a fairly large delta between the TU106-400A and the TU106-400 on the lower level. They used the EVGA RTX 2070 Black at $ 500 and the same EVGA RTX 2070 XC Ultra to show the differences and I strongly encourage you to read or watch their cover of these two cards to see how different two RTX 2070s can be .
In summary, there are two very different chips under the same name, enough so that the end user and the buyer have an interest in knowing which chip they buy. But, there is the opposite argument that by buying a better version of the card, you also get a better chip. Fortunately, in both cases, the guaranteed clock frequency is always indicated on the packaging of the card you purchased, so the silicon lottery still exists.
