Nokia 9 PureView Spotted Running Android 9 Pie

The Nokia 9 PureView is a very refreshing smartphone from HMD Global. Rumor has it that this device was launched in 2018, but we do not know if this will happen given the circumstances in which there were not many rumors or reports on this phone. We saw some leaks showing the configuration at 5 cameras at the back, but other than that, there was no other major leak.

This is the first Nokia PureView smartphone in the last 5 years. The latest Nokia smartphone with an excellent camera was the Lumia 1020, based on the Windows Phone operating system. We have come a long way since then, with Nokia focusing more on the midrange market.

Nokia 9 PureView with Android 9 Spotted Pie

At the beginning of last month, Nokia Malaysia's official Facebook page revealed the Nokia 9 PureView. The teaser showed the back of the phone with a penta-camera configuration. He also revealed that the cameras would use Light technology. Now a new leak has appeared online, revealing a Nokia 9 device running Android 9.0 Pie.

The phone was spotted on the FIH update server and it was revealed more details about the Nokia 9 PureView in the metadata. According to the data, the device is called "Olympic" internally. This could indicate the configuration of camera 5 at the back because the Olympic symbol also has five rings.

The FIH update server data also showed that the phone was running under a test version of Android 9.0 Pie. The build number is 00CN_4_030 and comes with the latest Android security patch from November. That's all the data revealed. This means that the Nokia 9 PureView will also work on Android, which is great, but not surprising. Nokia is committed to storing Android with most of its latest smartphone releases. Some of these phones are also part of the Android One program and therefore receive quick updates.

Nokia 9 PureView: an official tweet for more PureView mobiles

According to one tweet by Nokia again, the company hinted that the new Nokia 9 could launch a new era of PureView phones. Although this can not be considered an official statement as such, Nokia has nevertheless created a hashtag for this purpose. The PureView brand is a proven indicator of the quality of smartphone cameras and Nokia, as such, can benefit from the halo effect that these technologies produce on the entire brand.

Whether the new era of PureView is just a marketing gimmick or a true statement of a range of upcoming phones with more high-end PureView camera hardware, time will not tell. In the meantime, you can continue to view our ongoing coverage of PureView phones.

Currently, Nokia phones from HMD Global do not really have quality cameras. This is partly due to the fact that most Nokia phones have been equipped with strictly conventional hardware, even after taking into account the fact that the lenses are provided by Carl Zeiss. All this could change with the Nokia 9 PureView, this phone being supposed to revolutionize the smartphone's camera.

Nokia 9 PureView: return on PureView's legacy

The latest PureView smartphone, the Nokia 808, was equipped with a camera of exceptional quality. We can therefore expect similar, but better, performance from the Nokia 9. It is said that the configuration of the penta-camera has different sensors capable of performing many functions. Some reports have indicated that the main sensor of the camera could boast a resolution greater than 50 megapixels.

The phone will use technology similar to that used by Light (a smartphone and digital imaging company founded by Leica and Softbank), which combines images captured by all sensors, to provide a higher resolution photo. Light is known for its L16 camera, which has 16 sensors and uses software to produce a 52 MP photo capturing all possible details. We could see a similar approach with the Nokia 9 PureView.

In addition to becoming the champion of the camera, we anticipate that the Nokia 9 will be equipped with the latest hardware. The phone will most likely use the Snapdragon 845 chipset, which could be paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. According to another recent leak, Nokia could also include wireless charging on the smartphone. It should also include a built-in fingerprint sensor, as the images that leaked did not show a scanner at the back.

Once again, we do not know when Nokia / HMD Global plans to release this phone. Keep checking this space for more information on this phone.
