A complete remake of Shenmue was underway, but it was canceled

Before the announcement of the Shenmue I & II HD reissue, a complete remake of Shenmue was in preparation. From the appearance of the gameplay sequences, the remake would have been much better.

According to VG247, Digital Foundary acquired the gameplay of the canceled remake of Shenmue. This remake was canned at some point in 2017, but Sega did not explain why. The sequence contains almost 10 minutes of play and still shots. The video compares the scenes of the original game to its appearance in the remaster, as well as to its appearance in the remake.

Shenmue I & II is a remastering of two original games that adds high resolution textures and enhances lighting and character patterns. In our review of Shenmue, we rated the original game a score of 7.8 / 10, which "[Shenmue is] A game rich in stories, visuals and environmental stimulants, but illuminating all the gameplay. The fans of whodunits and RPGs will quickly understand the principle of the game, but there is something to satisfy also the casual player. "In our article on Shenmue II, we awarded 8.7 / 10 worth to the game, complimenting it for its history and music, but criticizing its graphics.

Sega announced that a sequel, Shenmue III, is in preparation. Announced for the first time in 2015 as a Kickstarter, Shenmue III is expected to release on PS4 and PC on August 27, 2019.
