A leaky image stirs a Nokia phone with five cameras

HMD seems to be working on an impressive network of cameras for a future Nokia Android device. Design sketches and leaky images suggest that we might be about to see a Nokia branded phone with five cameras in the back. The configuration of penta-lenses appeared for the first time in the rumors about a Nokia 10 device at the beginning of the year, and now an alleged photo leaked from the handset.

The camera module has five lenses arranged in a circle, with a visible Zeiss mark. HMD Global, the Finnish company that licensed production rights for Nokia phones, joined forces with Zeiss last year to bring Nokia and Zeiss together for the Android era. HMD has started using Zeiss optics in its latest Android handsets, and the lens maker has even patented a miniaturized zoom camera system that is very similar to this leak.

The images disclosed do not know exactly what this five-camera configuration would do on a Nokia device. Huawei launched its P20 Pro earlier this year with three rear cameras, which support a 3x optical zoom or a 5x hybrid zoom. It is also said that LG is considering five cameras (three in the back and two in the front) for its next flagship phone. Five camera sensors could certainly help you in all zoom functions, but they are likely to do much more than that. Nokia has a long history of working with cameras, dating from the 808 PureView and Lumia 1020 cameras, and more recently with the company's Ozo VR camera.

HMD recently acquired the PureView brand from Microsoft. So we could be about to see a new Nokia PureView phone. This does not mean that we will see the same image sampling technologies as the 808 or the Lumia 1020, because most of Nokia's talented PureView engineers left the company when Microsoft bought out Nokia's phone business. Apple even hired Nokia's Lumia photography expert. However, if a Nokia branded phone with five cameras is genuine, this could be an interesting entry into the competitive smartphone market.
