A Pixel 3 memory management problem kills applications and affects the camera

With its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, Google has designed smartphones quite fantastic in terms of experience. However, they are not quite perfect yet. In the last few days, as more and more consumers got their hands on the new devices, a serious problem arose. It looks like we have a memory management problem.

In the past few days, hundreds of Pixel 3 owners have reported strange behavior with their devices. A lot of users are noticing memory management issues that result in the destruction of background applications, camera problems, and so on. There are many examples, including one of the most popular music apps, such as Spotify, which is stopped during playback when taking a picture with the camera.

This problem was noted not only by regular users, but also by the press, including Android Central Daniel Bader, Verge's Dan Seifert, Android Police Artem Russakovskiiand many others.

Other examples of what is happening include reloading applications much more than usual. Some users have noted that the applications on the Pixel 3 seem to require a much faster reload, the phone sometimes having trouble keeping 2 or 3 applications in memory at a time. Another example apparently having the same underlying cause is a camera bug that can prevent the recording of images or the disappearance of some parts of a video.

Personally, I had a lot of memory problems with my Pixel 3 XL this weekend. Music streams have been stopped several times, images have not been recorded from the camera many times and the phone has even deleted YouTube at the same time, two or three times, during the Opening of Chrome.

Clearly, something is wrong. It's easy to point out Google's decision to include only 4GB of RAM, but that seems unlikely. After all, Google Pixel 2 devices have the same amount of RAM and less powerful processors, but none of these memory management issues.

I guess the problem lies in how Google optimizes the use of these 4GB on the Pixel 3. Presumably, it was designed to improve performance, and the Pixel 2 range has increased dramatically, resulting in in some of these questions. This is supported by a switch in the kernel, pointed out on Twitter. This same switch done on the pixel 2 also leads to a very aggressive memory management.

Most likely, Google can solve many of these problems in an update to make memory management less aggressive. Will this affect performance? It's hard to say, but we can only hope that Google will fix everything. It is unfortunate that Google was not content with 6 GB, because it seems that it would have avoided many of these problems.

Google has not yet commented on the memory problems of Pixel 3.
