We are used to seeing delays from Apple these days, whether new hardware or software. Remember when Apple fanboy bloggers had the habit of making fun of other companies for announcing products that were not ready yet? AirPods, iPhone X, HomePod and iPhone XR are just a few of the features that Apple has delayed in its recent history.
Some of the most interesting features of Apple mentioned during its iPhone event earlier this week, including Apple Watch 4 ECG support or eSIM features of the new iPhone, will not be available at launch. But AirPower is something else. Apple's bold vision of using a single device to wirelessly charge an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time was a defeat on Wednesday. And it's starting to look a lot like vaporware.
Apple announced AirPower last September, more than a year ago, and we thought the accessory would be available in the following months. But that did not happen. Not only that, but Apple just held its 2018 iPhone event without even mentioning the accessory. Worse, Apple claims that the device was never announced. As Apple Insider points out that Apple has erased almost all traces of AirPower from its website. Here is the only thing that comes up when you search AirPower on Apple.com:
It's not like AirPower is an indispensable product, and there are many wireless chargers for your iPhone. Of course, they will not charge the iPhone, the watch and the AirPod simultaneously, but it is not a necessity. However, the lack of marketing suggests that even Apple can not do certain things. And it's a rare sight for a company known for its secret to unveil a product that is not yet ready to be marketed. Unlike others, Apple usually only speaks in public of products that will be launched shortly after their unveiling. Looks like the AirPower charger is not going to arrive in stores soon, if ever.
The fact that Apple has so much trouble avoiding talking about AirPower has had a side effect. It prevented Apple from mentioning a notable update for iPhone XS phones – a faster wireless charging. Apple iPhone XS press release:
The front and rear glass features the most durable glass ever on a smartphone with better scratch resistance, while the rear glass speeds up wireless charging. The iPhone Xs and the iPhone Xs Max reach a new level of resistance to splashing and IP68 water up to 2 meters for 30 minutes and protect against daily spills including coffee, tea and soft drinks.
Here is an image of the introductory page of the iPhone XS, where wireless charging speeds are briefly mentioned:
The 2017 iPhones did not provide the type of wireless charging speed that some people were expecting. So you think Apple would tell the world that wireless charging is now much faster. But focusing on wireless charging anytime during the iPhone's presentation would only remind the world that Apple has promised an AirPower charging pad. And that he promised an AirPods box capable of wireless charging. Oh yes, and Apple has never launched a second generation of AirPods either.
That said, we could still see an AirPower charger in stores at some point. For the moment though, Apple deliberately chooses to pretend that it has never existed, so that sounds a lot like vaporware.
