Apple will launch its first iPhone 5G in 2020, according to an anonymous source who spoke to Quick business.

Apple plans to use Intel's 8161 modem chip in the range of the 2020 iPhone, Intel being supposed to be the only 5G chip vendor for Apple devices. The next 8161 chip will be fabricated using Intel's 10-nanometer process.



At present, Intel is testing an 8161 precursor, the 8060, which will be used for prototyping the iPhone 5G.

Quick businessAccording to a source, Apple has "recently been unhappy" with Intel because of Intel's inability to solve the problems of heat dissipation and battery life with the 8060 modem chip in preparation.

Many mobile operators, including Verizon and AT & T in the United States, will first use the millimeter wave spectrum (between 30 and 300 GHz) to connect the first 5G phones. But the millimeter wave signal requires heavy loads from the modem chips, explains our source. Despite its dissatisfaction with Intel, Apple has not considered reopening conversations with Qualcomm about providing 5G modems for iPhone 2020 models. However, the company has had discussions with the manufacturer of MediaTek modems chips as Plan B if Intel can not solve its modem problems over the next 18 months.

With its legal dispute with Qualcomm, Apple is relying on Intel chips for its devices. The iPhone XS, XS Max and XR all use Intel modem chips, Apple having completely abandoned Qualcomm for its flagship iPhone range.

According to rumors of last year, Intel and Apple were already working on 5G chip technology for future iPhone devices. Intel would have thousands of people working on 5G technology to catch up with Qualcomm and win Apple's 5G modem deal.

The first 5G smartphones are expected to debut in early 2019, the first Android devices using Qualcomm 5G chips. 5G technology is expected to deliver speeds 10 to 100 times faster than average 4G connections, at one gigabit per second or higher, with lower latency and other benefits.
