Huawei unveiled four new mobile devices earlier this week, all of which are part of its new Mate 20 series. We are currently looking at the Mate 20 and 20 Pro, Porsche Design Mate 20 RS and Mate 20 X models. As expected, Huawei introduced a series of interesting features that are not yet available on other flagship Android smartphones, making the Mate 20 Pro, the hottest Android handset that money can buy. Assuming your government allows carriers in your country to sell it, of course.
In what follows, we will show you all the new features introduced by Huawei that are not available on most competing devices. And while some of the following features are available on other Android devices, it's still the Mate 20 Pro that seems to be a winner, given all that it has to offer.
Infinity Display meets the screen
As cool as Huawei's new flagship product, the Mate 20 Pro, it barely sports an original design. Others, including Huawei, have already copied Samsung's curved screens. But the Mate 20 Pro has a screen that combines Samsung's curved Infinity with Apple's iPhone X, and this combo is not available on other devices.
Speaking of screens, the Mate 20 X also deserves a mention because of its size. The phone may not be Huawei's best device this year, but it still gives you a 7-inch diagonal screen. It is however a flat screen and the handset has a smaller camera slot.
Fingerprint sensor in display
We have observed the digital fingerprint technology integrated on the screen on other smartphones, but most of them are midrange devices. Phones like Galaxy S9, Note 9 and Pixel 3 do not have it. Apple's iPhones are not even fingerprint scanning anymore. Huawei also said that its fingerprint technology in the screen was associated with dynamic pressure sensing technology, adding that it was 30% faster than the alternatives. The OnePlus 6T will have a built-in fingerprint sensor, but the phone will not be delivered until next month.
The USB-C port also serves as the lower speaker
Google Pixel 3 phones are uglier than their competitors because Google insisted that the speakers are placed at the front of the phone. The Huawei's Mate 20 phones, meanwhile, have almost completely dropped the lower chin. The USB-C port can be used to charge the handset and transfer data, or to listen to music using a wired headset. But he also acts as a lower speaker.
7 nm processor
The Kirin 980 7nm processor that equips all new Mate 20 phones has no rival in the Android universe. Samsung and all the others will not launch flagship products with 7nm chips before next spring. This detail alone makes the Mate 20 Pro the best rival of the iPhone XS at the moment. Apple is the only other smartphone maker to have smartphones powered by 7-nm smart technology this year.
The Mate 20 X also deserves a special mention because of its new cooling system that includes a steam chamber and a graphene film to cool faster this chip Kirin 980. Curiously, the Mate 20 Pro does not have the same system cooling. Again, the Mate 20 X is optimized for resource-hungry gaming sessions.
Triple lens camera
Aside from the P20 Pro launched this spring, also a Huawei creation, few flagship smartphones come with a triple-lens camera system. The recently launched V40 ThinQ is one of them, but LG's camera technology may not be able to outperform Huawei's camera given what we've seen so far. Huawei has created many AI-based software features, including video recording with support for real-time editing and support for taking macro shots at 2, 5 cm from the subject.
40W fast charge battery
The Mate 20 Pro supports a fast wired load of 40 W, which means you only need 30 minutes to charge 70% of the battery life. And when this battery is a monster of 4,200 mAh larger than the battery of Note 9, it's even more impressive. Speaking of battery size, the Mate 20 X gaming phone has an even larger 5,000 mAh battery but does not support the same fast charge technology.
Reverse wireless charging
The Mate 20 Pro supports fast 15 Watt wireless charging (30% charge in 30 minutes). And the Mate 20 Pro will be the first smartphone capable of wirelessly charging other smartphones or gadgets that support wireless charging. Huawei showed on stage an image showing a Mate 20 Pro charging the battery of an iPhone XS.
3D face unlocking
Many have copied Apple's iPhone X, but very few have managed to replicate the features. The Xiaomi Mi 8 is a device that performs face recognition in 3D similar to Face ID. And now, the Mate 20 Pro is too. But Huawei has other 3D tricks, including its version of Animoji, but also a 3D scanning feature that allows users to scan real objects and add them to RA environments, including the camera app. Sony uses a 3D scanning technology similar to that used to scan the user's head. However, the Huawei 3D Depth Detection Camera can be used to animate objects in the RA.
In addition, 3D Face Unlock can also be used to access a protected area of the smartphone that can contain applications and data. Mobile payments are also supported.
Nano-memory cards
Mate 20 phones are not as generous in terms of storage options, but they support expandable storage up to 256 GB. More interestingly, they support nano-memory cards (NM), a proprietary technology of Huawei. The cards use a special SIM tray that can hold two SIM cards or one SIM card and one NM card.
Wireless projection
All Mate 20 phones can project content on a wireless display, provided that the screen supports Miracast tech. This is Huawei's PC smartphone mode, designed to compete with Samsung's DeX accessory system. Huawei says that you can still use the phone's messaging and calling features independently of the projected image and that your privacy will be protected.
LTE and GPS
The Mate 20 Pro is the first phone in the world to support Cat. 21 LTE connections up to 1.4 Gbps, although you also need your carrier to support it. The phone also offers dual-band GPS support (L1 + L5) for a more precise location, a feature not previously found on the Xiaomi Mi 8.
