While you wait for the arrival of your order or you are considering an upgrade, AppleInsider introduces you to all the new features built into the revised version of the Apple Watch Series 4.

Of all the great Apple announcements at the September "Gather Round" event, the Apple Watch was arguably the most exciting. Series 4 marks the first physical overhaul of the Apple watch since its first release.

Many updates – both inside and out

Apple Watch Series 4 Display

The biggest feature is the new almost edge-to-edge screen that collects more than 30% more usable real estate. The 4 Series also has an updated case that has more subtly rounded angles to match that of the screen, and even manages to be slightly thinner.

If you have a lot of bands, do not worry, all existing watch groups will remain in place. The 38 mm strips correspond to the new size of 40 mm and the old 42 mm strips correspond to the 44 mm.

To go with a bigger screen, Apple has reworked many elements of the UI, including updating existing faces and new faces. Developers are able to include new aspects to their complications, for example to fit the rounded corners or the larger space on the updated Infograph Modular watch face.

Apple Watch Series 4 Digital Crown

The Apple Crown digital signature now features a brand new mechanism with haptic feedback during rotation, allowing even greater accuracy. It is both 30% smaller than the last generation, while using 21% more coins.

In the updated version of the digital crown is a sensor, also present at the back of the watch. Touching these two electronic sensors at the same time completes the circuit and makes possible another novelty: an ECG. The screen will count you and give you the results of your ECG and any potential abnormality detected.

Heart Rate ECG Series 4 Apple Watch

The ECG is only one of the new features of heart health monitoring. Series 4 is also able to detect a low heart rate, as well as atrial fibrillation. Unfortunately, some of these new features will not be available at launch and will appear in a future software update.

Inside is a new second-generation accelerometer with double dynamic range, with sampling eight times more frequent and capable of measuring up to 32G. Thanks to this, Apple Watch Series 4 can now detect falls. In particular, it can detect falls, slips and trips.

If it detects a fall, an alert will appear on the Apple Watch. If you agree, the alert may be rejected. Alternatively, you can alert the emergency services with the SOS function of the watch.

If you do not answer, Apple Watch will alert the emergency services and send your position to your emergency contact if it detects no movement within 60 seconds.

Other enhancements include 50% more powerful speakers, new and rearranged microphones, a very fast 64-bit S4 processor, better cellular reception and Bluetooth 5.
