On the other side of the mirror: Operating system-level software can be the key to multi-core processor management AMD launches two more Ryzen Threadripper processors, but Dynamic Local Mode is a performance-enhancing software feature exclusive to the 2990WX models. 2970WX.

Just a few months ago, AMD launched the all-powerful second generation Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX and 2950X. As promised, the 2970WX and 2920X will complete the series with debuts on October 29th.

Arrived with 24 cores and 48 threads, the 2970WX is almost identical to the 2990WX sharing the same clock frequencies, the same cache and the same TDP. Likewise, the 2920X shares the same specifications as the 2950X but contains 12 cores and 24 threads with a lower boost rate of 100 MHz to 4.3 GHz.

Although the hardware is relatively similar, the software will be a differentiator between the models. AMD introduces a software called Dynamic Local Mode (Dynamic Local Mode) exclusive to the 2990WX and 2970WX. Essentially, applications that work better with faster access to DRAM must be moved to cores with access to local memory for on-the-fly execution. Software that is better able to take advantage of the many hearts will be encouraged to take full advantage of all available resources.

While running as a background service on Windows 10, dynamic local mode determines the threads that require the most computation. Priorities are ranked and tasks deemed most demanding are moved to cores with direct access to memory.

Although not all software is faster, AMD is making significant gains in some games and in some tests. Battlefield 1 under DirectX 12 with Ultra Preset on a 2990WX shows a 47% increase in performance. FarCry 5, PUBG and Alien Isolation also show two-digit improvements through the activation of dynamic local mode.

As long as the benchmarks are not known, it is difficult to accurately assess the competition between the two newest processors, knowing that software will make the difference. In the future, AMD plans to integrate this feature into the chipset drivers in order to make it standard for all users with supported hardware, but it is more of a problem. a long-term goal.

The new Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX and 2920WX processors will be available from October 29th. AMD Ryzen Master will automatically configure Dynamic Local Mode with an update that will also be released Oct. 29 for systems with a 2990WX or 2970WX processor.
