AMD's Radeon Vega 20 gives MacBook Pro a big boost

The all-new Radeon Pro Vega 20 graphics processor option for the 15-inch MacBook Pro 2018 is expected to dramatically improve graphics performance. AppleInsider combines the high-end model equipped with the graphics processor and Intel Core i9 processor with the basic MacBook Pro equipped with a Radeon 560X to see the significant differences between the two configurations.

The option to purchase the latest Vega-based GPUs is not immediately offered when customers are trying to buy a 15-inch MacBook Pro from the Apple website. After selecting the model from $ 2,799, two new options under "Graphics" are presented: an additional $ 250 for the Vega 16 graphics processor and a $ 350 option for Vega 20.

Vega's two graphics options contain 4 gigabytes of AMD's latest-generation, higher-performance HBM2 (HBM2) memory that is faster and more efficient than the GDDR5 associated with the Radeon 560X. We opted for the more expensive Vega 20 to get the most out of Apple's flagship notebook with 32GB RAM and the Core i9 six-core processor.

Starting with the OpenCL Graphics test from Geekbench 4, the Vega 20 gets a 37% higher score than the Radeon 560X, which is really impressive. Although $ 350 is a heavy price, if you are already spending almost $ 3,000 or more on equipment, it is probably worth the extra cost associated with this type of performance.

For the Metal Test of Geekbench 4, there is no improvement as much as possible, simply because the Radeon 560X is already very powerful. We still saw an improvement of 23% compared to Vega.

We then tested Unigine Heaven, a reference that uses both the processor and the graphics card to simulate a video game scenario.

Here, the Vega 20 has recorded nearly twice as many frames per second as the Radeon 560X with the i9 processor, an improvement we did not expect to see. This could be the first MacBook capable of running some of the latest video games with high graphics settings and high frame rates.

Windows 10 was then installed using Bootcamp to retry the reference of Unigine Heaven, and we were surprised to find that the score reached 49 frames per second. This shows that there is a huge difference between Mac and Windows for games and suggests that more tests in this area should be done in the future.

We were curious to know if the new models had an impact on the performance of the i9 processor under the Cinebench R15 processor test. To our surprise, the Vega 20-based MacBook Pro has an average of 57 points higher than the 560X MacBook Pro i9, but we do not know if the result is due to software enhancements or possible changes to the cooling system for that Vega.

Although these tests clearly show that Vega 20 has been significantly improved in terms of performance, this is only part of the story. AppleInsider will perform more tests in other areas, including video editing, to see how it gets up.
