The Fallout series has embraced more weird and strange weapons over the years, and this new tool of melodic disorder Fallout 76 pushes the envelope even further – while further revealing how Bethesda is approaching its new West Virginian setting. Meet the guitar sword, as revealed by a screenshot of the official Twitter account of Fallout 76.
How are the Appalachians different from the Commonwealth or Wasteland? It starts with a guitar sword. # Fallout76 pic.twitter.com/6PKTyHwREySeptember 20, 2018
It sounds more like a banjo sword with this round frame for me, but maybe that name sounds a bit too bumpkin-y country. In any case, it seems indeed halfway between something you sit on your porch on a hot summer night and something that Cloud Strife would proudly wield in battle.
In addition to confirming a new weapon, the tweet also strongly indicates the name of the region we will explore in Fallout 76: Appalachia. After all, we did not just go around Massachusetts in Fallout 4, we were residents of the Commonwealth, a region largely influenced by the American War of Independence. Fallout: New Vegas Mojave Wasteland did something similar by playing Western sensibilities of post-apocalyptic Nevada.
Appalachia is the real name of a region that runs along the central and southern Appalachians, and it makes sense that it does not yet have a new name of "Wasteland". in Fallout 76, only a few decades have passed since the bombs fell. Expect the game to play on the folkloric connotations (equitable or not) of life in West Virginia with its tourist traps and its general Americana. I'm not saying that there will be Meme it absolutely to be super mutants in straw hats, just that there is a strong possibility super mutants in straw hats. And I bet they'll be very practical with these guitar swords.
