Brawlhalla seems to have a lot of factors at work. He is strongly inspired by Super Smash Bros. and nobody else than Nintendo has managed to get away with it as well. Other fighting games have more complexity on this front but Brawlhalla establishes a middle ground between pick-and-play and true mechanics in depth, and does a lot with a little.
Simple character designs are barely perceptible because the combat mechanisms are extremely satisfying.
