Samsung unveiled new display innovations at the SDC18 a few weeks ago, with a particular focus on the Infinity Flex foldable screen that will be integrated into foldable smartphones next year. But the other Infinity screens, and in particular the Infinity-O design, also stood out. Before the Samsung developer conference, rumors circulated that the Galaxy S10 would have a 100% screen with a minimal number of frames and no screen. This screen would have a hole somewhere at the top where the front camera would go. Now, an insider claims that Samsung will be the only company to use this display technology for an exclusive period, apparently confirming previous reports offering an idea of the production of Infinity-O displays.
This insider is no other than Ice Universe, which regularly reveals all kinds of information privileged on social networks.
According to this leading publisher, Samsung Infinity-O screen technology will be exclusive to Samsung products for an indefinite period.
Samsung calls technology "Hole In Active Area" or HIAA, something we had heard before Ise published the tweet above ("hall" is a typo). Last week, a Korean report announced that Samsung would use diode-pumped semiconductor lasers (DPSS) for the manufacture of HIAA displays. According to the report, Samsung Display would drill two holes in the screen, one for the camera lens and the other for the infrared sensor.
Samsung has already tested Infinity-O displays for midrange devices. The Galaxy A8 should be the first device to offer an HIAA design integrating all screens. This means that HIAA technology will not be exclusive to Samsung's flagship products, such as the Galaxy S10. But Samsung can not sell the HIAA screens to its competitors for a while if Ice's revelation is accurate. Of course, he has an excellent track record with inside information, so it is reasonable to think that this information might be accurate.
Samsung Display provides screens for various smartphone manufacturers, including Apple and Google. Among these, Apple already has a patent describing the technology needed to punch holes in a screen. Note that this is not a design patent, but a patent that explains how one could pierce the screen without damaging it.
It's not because Apple holds a patent to drill holes in smartphone screens that iPhones next year will have screens resembling those of the Infinity-O Galaxy S10, especially if Samsung is because of this supposed exclusivity. On the other hand, Samsung likes to make money with the iPhone. In addition, LG Display is also a supplier of OLED displays for iPhone XS handsets, and recent patents have shown that LG is also working on holed screens.
