Android 9 Pie still missing the latest issues of distribution, Oreo sees a leap in adoption

Google has just released its latest Android distribution numbers for the end of September and surprisingly, Android 9 Pie has not opened its account yet. The latest version of Android has been out for over a month and its absence on the chart means that it still works with less than 0.1% of the total number of active Android devices. Meanwhile, Android Oreo sees a good jump and is just under the 20% mark.

Android 9 Pie has not yet resumed its pace because only a few devices are running the latest version. The pie was initially deployed for Pixel cameras and the essential phone. OnePlus 6 and Nokia 7 Plus have also received the update recently. These devices are still too few and it will take time before new phones are updated to Pie. We expect things to pick up towards the end of this year and the first quarter of 2019, when new phones will come with the Pie off the beaten path. With the release of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in October, we expect Pie to debut in the distribution board by the end of next month.

Android Oreo, on the other hand, suddenly sees a quantum leap, quite late in the day, could we say. Oreo is now over a year old and it is still the third most used Android version. The combined versions of Android 8.0 and Oreo 8.1 together represent 19.2%, up from 14.6% at the end of last month.

Android Nougat, two years old, remains the most used version with 29.3%. Although still at the top, this is a marginal drop from last month when it stood at 30.8%. Behind Nougat, Android 6.0 Marshmallow is the second most used version with 21.6%. Meanwhile, Android Lollipop runs on 18.3% of all active devices. Android KitKat and Jelly Bean are respectively 7.8% and 3.2%. Notably, the Android ice cream sandwich and spice bread have remained at 0.3% since last month.
