Messaging from an Android smartphone may be about to improve. In the future, RCS messaging will work between Android Messages and Samsung Messages applications, thanks to a new agreement that aims at RCS interoperability between the company's applications and the underlying platform.
RCS (Rich Communications Services) is the new generation of SMS for features similar to WhatsApp and iMessage. The collaboration should fill a gap in the support of RCS in the Android ecosystem.
RCS is supported by 57 mobile operators around the world, but Samsung and Google are also developing their own RCS platforms for mobile operators.
Sprint was the only US carrier mentioned in February announcing that a handful of carriers in Europe, North America and Latin America would support RCS via the Jibe RCS cloud, acquired by Google in 2015. Operators and several OEMs have agreed to install Android. Messages, which supported Jibe RCS, as the default mail application.
Samsung in 2016 acquired a Canadian RCS platform and launched last year its own RCS cloud, supporting Galaxy devices and a collaboration with Deutsche Telekom, KT, SK Telecom, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

While many Android OEMs have agreed to send phones with Android messages, Samsung has chosen to keep its own application, Samsung Messages, for its Galaxy phones.
The collaboration, announced by Samsung on Wednesday, aims to ensure that RCS messaging works "seamlessly" between Android messages and Samsung messages, according to Samsung.
This will allow users of Samsung phones and other Android phones to enjoy the features of messaging applications such as chat via Wi-Fi, enriched group chats, high resolution photo and video sharing between Android devices. .
"By working together, Google and Samsung will ensure that their email clients, Android messages and Samsung messages work seamlessly with each company's RCS technology, including messaging and enterprise platforms," he said. said Samsung.
Additional support for the RCS system will apply first to the Galaxy S8, S8 +, S8 Active, S9, S9 +, Note8, Note9 and some A and J series devices running Android 9.0 or later .
The new Galaxy phones will also come with native RCS support as long as the support supports it.
