Picked up by MacRumors, iOS has started locking owners of iPhones (and to a lesser extent iPads and Apple TVs) out of their devices, disabling their Apple IDs. And Apple has now acknowledged it.
Citing multiple reports across Reddit and Twitter, MacRumors says users are being told they can no longer use their devices “for security reasons”. In response, @AppleSupport is recognising the issue and guiding users to the company’s Support Communities page which tells users how to restore access when Apple IDs are locked and disabled.
Curiously, despite this wave of lockouts, Apple’s System Status page has not indicated any problems with Apple ID. That said, I’ve been now been contacted by multiple affected users, including friends, who confirmed they have been hit by the lockout – even when using two-factor authentication.
Apple itself has not issued a statement, so I have asked for one and will update this article if it is received.
In absence of this, the question becomes whether this was a mass iOS software failure or a genuine security crisis. After all, a large hack would require many users to reset their Apple IDs “for security reasons”.
Either way, this is not a great look for Apple and the timing could not be worse. And this is even without touching upon the decision of major carriers to pull eSim support for the iPhone XS (details), iPhone XS Max (details) and iPhone XR (details) until further notice.
