After a wait of three months and an unprecedented number of 12 beta versions,
Apple
Here's everything you need to know about iOS 12 …
Who is it for?
One of the best things about iOS 12 is that it runs on all iOS 11 compatible devices. That means the iPhone 5S or later, the iPad mini 2 or later. later and the iPod touch 6th generation or later. Since the iPhone and iPad models are now five years old, it's a very impressive support.
Compatible devices should automatically be prompted to install iOS 12. Otherwise, you can trigger it manually by navigating until you reach Settings> General> Software Update. Apple iOS 12.1 beta testers (later), remember that you have to Unwind your device for the update to appear.
The size of each iOS update depends on your device and the version of iOS from which it is upgraded. As a generational version, iOS 12 is predictable, with volumes up to 1.6 GB for the iPhone X (which receives the lion's share of the new features).

Before you start, why not upgrade to iOS 12? In short: because it's far from being bug-free.
The main problems are connectivity. A number of users report that they have either difficulty making callsCalls fail completely or their mobile data no longer works (1,2 persons,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,ten,11,12,13,14,15, etc). CarPlay also proves capricious for many iOS 12 upgrades (1,2 persons,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,ten, etc.) when there are speaker, camera and user interface interface problems (1,2 persons,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,ten, etc).
Predictably, the battery life is not great for many users either, although this is a primary focus for iOS 12. Given the reindexing that happens With iOS updates, however, I am optimistic about improving some of these issues in the coming days.
It is also worth noting that there are a lot of complaints regarding the removal of the Bluetooth icon by iOS 12, but Apple has confirmed it's by design and you will have to dig through the settings to get Bluetooth information. Awesome. New animations are also reserved for iPhones with Face ID.
What is my point of view on all this?
I've had a lot worse considering the previous iOS generational upgrades, so that's not really a bad start. Not everyone has the problems listed above, and Apple did not have to release a release the same day, as was the case with wacky version of iOS 10.
So what do you get?
iOS 12 has the longest iOS release notes I remember, Apple's official statement is:
"IOS 12 brings performance improvements and exciting new features for iPhone and iPad. Photos introduces new features to help you rediscover and share photos in your library. Memoji, a new, more customizable Animoji, makes messages more expressive and fun. Screen Time helps you and your family to understand Siri Shortcuts offers a faster way to accomplish tasks with the ability for any application to work with Siri, augmented reality becomes even more interesting with the possibility for developers create shared AR experiences and the new privacy features protect you from the web. "
You can get a full breakdown of all the new features right here but for me, these are the strong points:
Performance improvement – mentioned in a somewhat fatal way with most iOS updates, they are really tangible in iOS 12. Apple applications will be launched 2 times faster, the device 70% faster and the keyboard will open 50% more quickly, the animations too. The comments I receive are correct.
Best notifications – A big. Like Android, iOS 12 finally gathers the notifications while the instant setting also borrows from Google, which allows you to control specific notification settings directly from an alert. This can be blocking notifications from a specific application or telling this app to not buzz your phone for its notifications.
Third-Party CarPlay Support – Finally, Google Maps and Waze can access CarPlay, Apple has opened its system to third parties. If only CarPlay did not prove as buggy in this initial version (see above).
Screen time – Essentially tracking your use of your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, it compiles this data into daily and weekly charts to help you use your phone more responsibly. This includes defining "downtime" periods that block notifications and limit device access to your children. Google did the same with Android 9 Pie with "Digital Wellbeing" and the trend is welcome.
Siri Shortcuts – Allows you to create custom orders for Siri, and the best thing about it is that it is compatible with third-party applications. As a result, the controls can be as simple as getting a third-party sports app to directly access your favorite team, or as complex as combining several features such as automatically ordering a coffee from your local Starbucks when you leave your home. at one point. day.
Siri Translations – now supports 50 languages
Camera improvements – There are several new filters and effects, the Portrait mode has improved face detection for a more accurate background bokeh (aka blur) and QR codes are highlighted automatically when they are landmarks.
Photo memories – Siri can now extract photos and videos based on people, places, events and keywords. This also extends to the Photo Gallery which features a new "For You" tab with automatically selected highlights on your reel – a key feature of Google Photos.
Support for RAW editing – a big one for photography lovers. If you do not know what is a Raw file is, however, you do not need that.
ARKit 2 – ARKit has been heavily publicized, but has not been released on iOS 11, so iOS 12 brings Generation 2 with better face tracking, object detection, location sharing and shareable file format (USDZ ).
Animoji and Memoji – Four new Animoji (T. rex, ghost, koala and tiger) plus tongue and wink detection, while Memoji allows you to create a custom-made avatar.
New user interfaces: Apple Books, News, and Stocks have all been updated with revised interfaces to improve navigation, such as the New Book Store tab for browsing and purchasing new titles, as well as organizing your library.
Improved confidentiality – iOS 12 even more tightly locks tracking in Safari by stopping the Share buttons and site comment widgets so you do not follow without permission and blocking device IDs used by advertisers (Google will hate this). Safari can also suggest and store passwords in the iCloud Keychain and sync them to all your Apple devices.
More options not to disturb – DND can automatically darken your display and silence notifications overnight until you unlock your device. Of course, you can set the time and days when this will happen.
Apples official security page Also confirms that iOS 12 corrects important security flaws in Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, as well as notes, messages and three in Safari.
Apple iOS 12 Verdict: installation (in one week)
I'm on track with iOS 12. I admire Apple's focus on performance and stability and, despite the bugs listed above, I must point out that there are has a lot less than what I've found in previous generational upgrades.
That said, historically, the more important the update, the higher the number of bugs and with only a small part of the compatible devices having been upgraded at this stage, I do not have the complete image to follow. As such, I would be surprised if we saw everything. For the moment, I will give a cautious boost to iOS 12, provided that no major new problems occur during the next week.
Needless to say, I will keep this article updated so be sure to check back regularly over the next few weeks.
The road ahead
Touched above, Apple has already released the first beta version of iOS 12.1. This does not mean that iOS 12 has a serious problem, it is simply that Apple is looking to bring several features that did not arrive in time for the release of iOS 12. The most notable are the discussions of FaceTime group that support an incredible 32 people simultaneously.
Before iOS 12.1, expect an iOS 12.0.1 bug fix. This is inevitable after such a big update, but I hope it will focus more on the settings than on the seismic still to be revealed.
