Apple's recent announcement to no longer divulge iPhone sales quarterly has prompted some investors to question Apple's ability to boost sales of its iconic smartphone. The rationale for this view is simple: if Apple were really confident that iPhone sales would increase, it would be eager to reveal these impressive sales figures.
Without going into the details of Apple's decision, I think it's fair to say that iPhone sales have great potential for growth in the coming years. Of course, consumers have been keeping their smartphone longer in recent times, but the imminent deployment of 5G networks and the subsequent arrival of iPhones enabled for 5G will inevitably provoke an avalanche of upgrades.
As to when a compatible iPhone 5G could be launched in store shelves, a source claiming to be aware of Apple's projects recently said Quick business that the company is currently targeting a 2020 version. In addition, the same source said that Apple plans to use only Intel modems. This last point is certainly plausible to the extent that there is no indication that the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm will soon lead to an agreement.
Intel has been working on a precursor of the 8161 called the 8060, which will be used for prototyping and testing the iPhone 5G. The 8161 will be manufactured using Intel's 10-nanometer process, which increases the density of transistors for speed and efficiency.
Apple, says our source, has not been satisfied with Intel lately. The most likely reason is related to the challenge of solving the heat sink problems caused by the 8060 modem chip.
Given that 5G smartphones are expected to arrive in 2019, the shipping date for iPhones activated in 2020 is quite logical, especially in light of Apple's propensity to wait a little longer than most other handset manufacturers to adopt new wireless technologies. Recall that Apple only adopted 3G in 2008 and waited until 2012 to introduce a device compatible with 4G iPhone 5.
