With fewer features than some other versions and an iMessage bug, plus a general flattening of the fast adoption curve, the platform is lagging behind all other versions of iOS.
Apple's iOS 12 has been available for less than two weeks, but it's enough time to say that iPhone owners are much less eager than in the past to update their devices, according to a Mixpanel study .
In the first 10 days of using iOS 12 for the general public, only 20.7% of iPhone users have downloaded it. This is considerably less than the download rate for iOS 7, which was adopted at 63.4% from its earliest days.
Iterations of iOS have become less spectacular since version 7, which according to Apple CEO Tim Cook was "the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone." It marked the end of the skeumorphic era and the adoption of the first digital concept centered on animations and multitasking.
Those who updated iOS 12 could play with Memoji, can see how long they spend watching their screens and use Siri shortcuts. But they can not hold FaceTime conversations to 32 people as promised.
The lackluster adoption could be due to a lack of interest in the features. But users can also wait to see what problems are with the operating system. Although every iOS version is tested before it's released, we've had some unpleasant surprises, such as the debacle of iOS 11's battery life. There are currently reports that iMessages would be sent to the wrong recipients, namely: a nightmare scenario for just about anybody.
Apple nevertheless remains proud of the rate of adoption of its iOS, especially compared to that of Android. Greg Joswiak, vice president of marketing iOS, iPad and iPhone products, said in an interview that the upgrade rate for iOS is much higher than for Android, and he expects that 80 % of users are using iOS 12 within a few months.
