Apple yesterday made the startling announcement that it is rebuilding Apple Maps from scratch. The move comes six years after the introduction of Apple Maps, whose launch has been anything but smooth.

Now, Apple says it's committed to rebuilding Apple Maps without resorting to third-party data providers.

Speaking to TechCrunch Apple's Vice President of Software and Internet Services, Eddy Cue, explains that the company is focusing on the construction of the best map application in the world. using its own mapping data, not a combination of external data providers.

Apple collects its data from iPhone users anonymously, as well as via the Apple Maps vans we've seen across the United States in recent years:

"We do not collect data even from point A to point B, "notes Cue. "We collect data – when we do it – anonymously, in sub-sections of the set, so we can not even say that there is a person who went from point A to point B.

segments of it.As you can imagine, this has always been a key part of this process.Indeed, we do not think it buys us anything [to collect more]. lose any functionality or capability in doing that. "

Apple, however, faces fierce competition in the mapping industry from Google Maps and Waze. It remains to be seen if Apple Maps, completely reorganized by Apple, will be able to compete with these applications.

Personally, I usually rely more on Google Maps than on Apple Maps. This is mainly due to the fact that Google Maps offers much better running directions than those of Apple Maps. I find Waze helpful in some cases, but I am not a fan of the design of the application.

And you? Which map application do you use? Do you think that Apple's Maps 2.0 could convince you to go back? Let us know in the poll below and in the comments!
