Aston Martin unveiled the most powerful series car that the company has ever offered. The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is powered by a 715 hp turbocharged V12 engine, putting well in the supercar territory with Lamborghini and Ferraris. But the British Aston Martin will offer a different experience from its Italian competitors.
Aston Martin has made more powerful cars but these models – such as Vulcan, Valkyrie and One-77 – are, or were, much more extreme and expensive with price tags in the millions of dollars and production numbers in dozens .
The DBS Superleggara is convenient and affordable in comparison. When it goes on sale later this year, prices will start at just over $ 300,000 and there will be no specific limit on production. (Not that you should expect to see these cars fill the parking lot at your local target.)
It may seem odd for a typically English car maker to put an Italian name on his car but "Superleggera" – meaning "super light" – was pulled directly from the Aston Martin story. The first model Aston Martin Superleggera, a DB4 introduced in 1961, had an ultra-light body manufactured using techniques developed in Italy. This new car has a body made of extremely lightweight but strong carbon composites and aluminum.
Like most Aston Martin, the DBS Superleggera is a Grand Touring car. This means that designers and engineers have focused on refinement and comfort as much as on gross performance. While it will be able to go from zero to 60 miles to the hour in just under 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 211 miles at the hour, it will not be a racing car tearing the eardrum.
With its richly upholstered leather seats and high-end hi-fi system, it will be comfortable on long country roads with no traffic. It will even have rear seats, though they will be a lot less comfortable than those before, especially for adults.
According to their wish to privilege the performance compared to the comfort, the drivers will be able to choose between three settings for the suspension, the engine and the transmission of the car. The GT mode will be the most relaxed, the Sport mode will strengthen the suspension and accelerate the response of the engine. Sport Plus mode will provide the fastest and most aggressive responses.
The first cars should be delivered to customers by the end of the year.
