ASUS plans to launch a brand new Chrome OS tablet at next year's CES show, which will be held January 8-11, according to a new WinFuture leak on Twitter. Roland Quandt. The details on the device in question are rare, but one expects it to arrive in a 10-inch format. In addition, depending on the source, it could very well be "one of the" devices configured to arrive from ASUS during the event. Mr. Quandt also revealed that the ASUS Chromebooks with model numbers C204, C403 and C434TA were also inbound. No specification has been provided with respect to one or the other of these devices, but it is possible to guess, speculatively, at least one aspect of each. Traditionally, ASUS Chromebooks have names that begin with the "C" symbol, designating them as a Chromebook, and numbers that correlate with the size of the screen. So, in this case, each of these Chromebooks looks like a device rated at 14 inches.
Context: In addition, it is not obvious that it is a high-end or mid-range Chrome OS device, or a device that is not incapable, but that targets the economic limits of the spectrum . The company's recent gadgets, though not bad, have not been up to the competition, but it does not require a new flagship product, the Chromebook or the ASUS Chrome tablet. By comparison, companies such as Acer, Lenovo, HP and even Dell have offered high-end convertible clamshell devices and the latest generation Intel chipsets. In addition, they included all of the most popular extras, ranging from backlit keyboards and built-in styli, to high-quality LPDDR4 RAM and well above average storage of 32GB. Each of these technologies was also launched under a leading brand, as is the case with the Lenovo C630 Chromebook Yoga and the Acer Business Class Chromebook Spin 13.
The latest ASUS Chromebooks, on the other hand, share common specifications that are not at all high-end. In fact, marketed under the names ASUS Chromebook C223, Chromebook C423 and Chromebook C523, each is equipped with Intel Celeron processors, a low RAM and thin frames surrounding the full HD panels in 12, 13 and 15 inches. None of these have been fully convertible with a 360 degree hinge or have included the high-end features presented by the competition.
Impact: It is also true that none of the competing devices mentioned above was a full-fledged tablet, but it is a part of the market that is currently occupied by only three devices, which gives HP the merit its detachable Chromebook x2. This makes it all the more difficult to determine what ASUS might consider bringing to the tablet at the upcoming mobile electronics show. On the one hand, Acer's Chromebook Tab 10 currently encompasses the entire budget segment of the Chrome OS tablet segment. This leaves a lot of room for more competition on this front and a relatively untapped market. However, there are actually only two competitors at the top, with Google's Pixel Slate joining HP's Chromebook x2. ASUS may be looking for a compromise between these media and could very well succeed, but the growth margin available in the relatively new category of devices is more than sufficient.
Do not be surprised when ASUS launches what I think is its first ~ 10-inch screen for Chrome OS tablet. Maybe one of the devices we see at # CES2019.
