Audi E-Tron GT Can Outpace Tesla Model S P100D Says German Automaker

The Audi E-tron GT is weeks away from being revealed to the public and already its manufacturer is talking smack about the competition.

In this case, it’s Tesla with a target painted on its back, particularly concerning the company’s Model S P100D, which Audi claims will overtake in terms of performance once its new model drops, according to Insideevs.

The boast might not be an idle one since Audi says a bit of genetic mutation of sorts is what is in the automaker’s arsenal. Thanks to some components from Porsche (in particular a skateboard platform using items from the Porsche Taycan) and a bit of technology from Audi, the E-Tron reportedly will have enough gusto to blow the doors off the Model S.

They’ll definitely need that Porsche know-how if the comparison stats are legit. Currently, E-tron can reportedly reach 248.5 miles before recharging the 95-kilowatt-hour battery is necessary. However, Tesla’s Model S has recorded longer distances of up to 315 miles.

Audi also wants to concentrate on delivering more power, but even on paper, there’s still lots to do. Schematics released thus far reveal that the E-Tron is capable of delivering 435 horsepower (or 320 kilowatts), although, with an extra boost, a user can get access to 503 horsepower (or 379 kilowatts). Audi’s going to have to squeeze some extra juice out of its new ride considering test results regarding the Model S, which, dating back to 2016, demonstrated its engines had as much as 760 horsepower (567 kilowatts).

Then there’s the element of quickness, with the ability of the Tesla Model S to reach 60 miles an hour in 2.5 seconds, although other timed tests have shown results as fast as 2.3 seconds. For a battery-powered four-door sedan that’s not too shabby at all, and a benchmark that’ll be a huge challenge for Audi to beat.

Where the E-Tron has an edge over the Model S is in its sticker price, with models slated to go for roughly $100,000. The Model S currently sells for roughly $135,000, with power upgrades available for about $20,000.

Whatever secrets Audi might be holding back might surface in November, when the concept for the E-Tron GT will be featured at the Los Angeles Motor Show, with the possibility of the vehicle hitting showrooms before the end of 2018.
