Bentley Continental GT Convertible unveiled in front of L.A.

Bentley recently entrusted us with a completely redesigned Continental GT and we now have his airy twin, the Continental GT Convertible. Making its debut just before the start of the LA Auto Show, the topless Bentley incorporates all that's new and good in Conti's new design. Like the coupe, the 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine develops 626 horsepower and 664 pounds of torque. The acceleration up to 60% occurs in 3.7 seconds, very quickly, before being exceeded at 207 mph. It's a convertible, but it certainly will not slow you down because of it.

The style of the hood is elegant, but does not move much away from the coupe beyond the obvious lack of roof. That's fine, because the new Continental GT is sensational in both cases. Bentley also offers an option for old-fashioned tweed lovers: a fabric roof. The details on how such a roof is possible have not yet been explained, but we assume that it is not made of traditional tweed (and not waterproof). Whether you choose tweed or any other more natural material for your roof, Mr. Bentley says the soundproofing is better for offering a three decibel noise reduction compared to its predecessor. It will open in 19 seconds at a maximum speed of 30 mph.

Like the coupe, the cabriolet loses a lot of weight: it is now 20% lighter than before and 5% stiffer. The cabriolet technology has progressed a few steps over the previous generation. The convertible offers a rotating display in the center stack, which allows the driver to choose whether he wants to see the 12.3-inch touchscreen or the uninterrupted wood panels. Bentley spared no expense for the real wood paneling. Each car uses more than 107 square feet of the finest wood that Bentley can get hold of. A new neck brace is apparently warmer and quieter than before, and now also has heated armrests.

Two different technology packages will be offered at launch. One of them calls itself "City" and adds the hands free operation of the trunk, the recognition of the traffic signs, the braking systems of the city and a camera seen from above. The other one calls it "Touring" and uses adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, a head-up display, an infrared night vision camera and a pre-detection braking. Frankly, many of these options should be standard, like on a $ 30,000 Honda Accord.

All other relevant equipment is virtually identical to that of the 2019 Continental GT already in use. It has three-chamber air springs, 48-volt active anti-roll bars and enough brakes to stop a 200-car train. To be exact, the ten-piston pliers are at the front and the four-piston calipers do the work at the back. That's 28 pistons if anybody wants to count.

The price and availability are not yet known, but maybe Bentley will tell us more when the car will be showcased at the LA Auto Show.The Conti hardtop starts at $ 214,600, so wait- you at a considerable price increase, especially if you tick the box for tweed …
