How to buy a laptop
Choose your operating system: If you want MacOS (probably the most intuitive and the most modern of the group), you are looking for an Apple. Windows will be the most popular operating system and in general it will offer the widest range of programs (especially useful if you want to work on your laptop). Again, a Chromebook offers a simplified version of many of the same basic features (Internet, word processing, etc.) and at a lower price.
Look at all the specifications: You want to invest in something that suits you. The size of the screen, weight, memory, graphics capabilities and battery life of each notebook will affect its adaptation to your personal needs. Be sure to read the specifications in detail so that your purchase meets your needs. If you are not sure of the meaning of all the jargon, here is a summary.
- RAM: This is the memory of your laptop. 4GB is acceptable at a minimum, but 8GB or more is recommended for a high performance model and / or daily use all day.
- CPU: The CPU is the processor responsible for running programs on your laptop. Look for multiple "core" models because every processor core optimizes performance: an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor will do great work.
- GPU: We are talking about graphics cards – things that deal with visuals. Each GPU has its own nuances and it's worth looking for to make sure it's powerful enough for your needs. High end gaming notebooks will require something special, like the Nvidia GeForce or AMD Radeon series.
- SSD (Solid State Drive) vs. Hard Disk Drive (HDD): This is a technical language for storage. Many laptops now come with an SSD drive, more expensive but faster. Both are doing the same job, but hard disk drives remain the common consumer preference (everything just runs a little slower).
- Resolution: The screen resolution will determine the quality of things you read and watch. Each billboard is composed of pixels and more pixels means more details. Look for a resolution of 1920 x 1080 or higher. Many brands use additional slang terms (such as Retina, QHD, and UHD), but you will want to focus on the numbers themselves for a jargon-free comparison.
Looking for a touch screen laptop? Many newer Windows laptops incorporate this convenient option and offer a lot to younger, older, or more artistic types. Some models of touch screens will be called "2 in 1 laptops" because they can be used as a laptop or tablet. If you opt for a standard keyboard, be sure to test it for more comfort if you type regularly.
