The blind test
There has been much talk of saying that the Pixel 3 camera was the best in the industry, although our previous test on the iPhone XS Max suggested the opposite. The two-to-one iPhone XR camera gives Google a new opportunity to recover its identity information when confronted with Apple's latest iPhone.
In this blind A-B test, there are 15 images taken with each phone. If you want to play at the same time, write down the pictures you prefer from each pair. The devices are identified under the gallery, so be careful if you do not want to spoil the surprise.
For all the photographs of the blind test, the picture A came from the iPhone XR, while the picture B was taken on the Pixel 3 XL.
To look closer
While image preferences are largely subjective and may differ from person to person, in my case, I find that I prefer Google Pixel 3 XL photos better. Here's why.
On this first picture, the iPhone lacks contrast and looks a bit too hot. The story is exactly the same in this picture. As for this one, the Pixel has completely bombarded the white balance, making it unrealistically blue.
An interesting thing is that the pixel automatically reframes in 2x while taking portraits, which also adds more blur and makes the background more compressed.
Here, the pixel is still too blue and prefers the border blur more on the iPhone.
In this one, the iPhone looks much more natural, but the Pixel was better able to bring out the shadows.
In this cafe, the white balance is better on the iPhone, but the Pixel 3 XL produces sharper details.
Here, the Pixel 3 has ruined the white balance, but in the opposite direction. It's now too orange.
On this picture where we zoomed as close as possible, the pixel was closer and seemed more detailed, despite the aggressive reduction of noise.
In this one, we actually framed shooting in the same way by getting closer to the iPhone XR, because you can not zoom in with a portrait photo, which shows the difference in compression. For this reason, the pixel is more beautiful.
On this selfie photo, the iPhone XR has a better appearance because the face and the background are brighter and the colors vibrant.
Here, the picture of the iPhone is really dull, which is honestly what it looked like in real life, but the picture of Pixel 3 is more pleasing to the eye.
By zooming in, the pixel could get closer and you can also see more details on the poster. Certainly a victory for Google's flagship product here.
Now, by testing the dynamic range, the pixel actually blows on the brightest part of the sky and I am darker than on the iPhone. The roof itself is far too blue on the pixel, so it's a win for the iPhone.
This picture basically illustrates the fact that you can not take portraits of objects on the iPhone XR, which is really a shame because of the magnitude of the blur on the pixel.
And finally, we see the same thing here. The photo of the pixel is so much better with the blur.
In conclusion, the iPhone did a lot better with the accuracy of the white balance, but it was not enough to beat the Pixel 3 XL because this phone was split in 2x for portrait mode photos . Cropping makes the background less compressed, because you have to stand further.
You can not zoom in before taking a portrait picture on iPhone XR, although you can crop it later. However, not everyone is willing to do it.
The Pixel 3 XL is also able to take portraits of objects, improving their appearance.
Not only that, but the photos of the iPhone lack contrast, which makes the pictures of the pixel more detailed.
Overall, we must give the victory to the Pixel 3 XL.
