BMW is preparing a digital voice assistant who is familiar with your car's operations and can learn your preferences over time. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant version, which is scheduled for March 2019, will be available for cars using BMW's new operating system, BMW Operating System 7.0.
The wizard will initially respond to "Hey BMW", but you can customize the digital co-pilot by changing the call word of the vehicle voice assistant. The press release used "Charlie" and "Joy" to rename examples, suggesting that you will also be able to select the genre.
BMW promises that future versions of Intelligent Personal Assistant will be compatible with other leading digital voice assistants. For example, you may want to renounce the BMW "Alexa" system to avoid potential confusion afterwards.
The intelligent personal assistant will be able to operate and explain the functions of the vehicle. You can say "Hey BMW, I'm cold" to ask BMW's intelligent personal assistant to adjust the temperature, or ask "Hey BMW, how does the heating and air conditioning system work?
The first version of the intelligent personal assistant will be able to memorize the tuning preferences of your vehicle. According to BMW, future versions will be able to learn and adjust settings automatically.
The system will remember every command, every question, and every parameter you create to form a complete profile. This profile, called BMW ID, will connect the vehicle to you and your digital world. So you can probably enter another BMW, enter your ID and customize the new vehicle.
Intelligent Personal Assistant will connect to BMW's Open Mobility Cloud. Remote Over The Air (OTA) upgrades automatically add functionality and eventually fix problems. If you buy a BMW 2019 with OS 7.0 before March 2019, the OTA feature will add the Intelligent Personal Assistant to your car without the need to visit a dealership.
Intelligent Personal Assistant will be available in 23 languages in a basic version next March, as an option for BMWs equipped with BMW OS 7.0 as part of the Live Cockpit Professional. An advanced version with extended non-advertised features will be called Connected Package Professional.
