The M35i inaugurates BMW's most powerful four-cylinder engine.
The power comes from a turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-liter developed with the contribution of M. It produces 306 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful four-cylinder engine in the lineup BMW. Power flows on all four X2 wheels thanks to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The X2 M35i takes 4.9 seconds to reach 62 mph from a stop. That's about as fast as the model will do because BMW will probably build a full X2 M.
The changes extend beyond the engine. BMW has also made the suspension stiffer to provide a sportier and more engaging driving experience on winding roads. Bigger brakes on both axles control the power. Finally, the company promised that it would make the direction clearer to achieve what it qualifies as a direct and precise sensation.
Subtle design changes help the M35i stand out from the base xDrive28i. They are pretty standard. At the front, you'll notice a gray trim around the kidney grilles and a more sculpted bumper with extra vents. The mirror caps are more aerodynamic, while the rear receives a new bumper insert. M35i-specific alloy wheels are also on the menu.
The interior wins a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel. Buyers can order front sport seats at an additional cost.
BMW will start building the 2019 X2 M35i in November 2018. Deliveries will begin shortly thereafter. Price information has not yet been released.
