After a few years in which Chrome OS powered mostly low-cost laptops and occasional premium 2-in-1s, things are starting to look for Chromebook buyers. A new wave of laptops is coming up in the coming months and promises to be more successful, innovative and powerful.
HP launched this new wave with the first Chrome OS tablet that does not target the education market, and the company obviously designed it to compete with Chrome Chrome's Chrome Chrome. That means HP's $ 580 Chromebook x2 supports Google's high-end Pixelbook, which starts at around $ 750 on sale. Does the Chromebook x2 stand a chance against its well-established and well-connected competition?
Design
The Chromebook x2 certainly looks like a real challenger of the Pixelbook. It is well built, with its all-metal shelf part giving off a "solid piece of metal and glass" that exudes quality. It also has an avant-garde design, with a keyboard base in which the tablet magnetically hooks on and creates a stable traditional flip-top notebook on the lap.
HP has also given the Chromebook x2 a remarkable aesthetic, the back of the tablet wearing a color palette "white ceramic", made of anodized plating coating (AED) promising to help the tablet to stay safe from scratches and agreeable. The tablet combines with an attractive keyboard base, with a rubberized surface that looks good and looks good.
The Google Pixelbook also aims for a quality look and feel. It's a mix of metal, plastic and glass that stands out with a design that essentially mimics the company's Pixel smartphones. The same type of glass cutout adorns the top quarter of the back of the chassis, identifying the Pixelbook as a member of the Google family while improving wireless connectivity.
The two 2-in-1 glasses are a little larger than usual, which should make them more comfortable in tablet mode. They both have excellent keyboards and touch pads for traditional typing and control, as well as responsive touch screens and active styluses.
Frankly, if both cost the same price, we will call this category a draw. But the Chromebook x2 makes its elegance and robust construction available for much less money.
Performance
The Chromebook x2 is equipped with an Intel Core m3-7Y30 processor with low power consumption of 7th generation, 4GB RAM and 32GB eMMC storage. These components are very fast for Chrome OS, which is a relatively lightweight operating system that does not require the same CPU, RAM or storage demand (thanks to the built-in Google Drive cloud service) as Windows 10 we found that the Chromebook x2 was able to quickly manage everything we asked, whether it was with Chrome, Chrome OS or Android.
The Pixelbook is even more powerful, with Intel Core i5 and i7 processors running low power, up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB NVMe SSD storage very fast. This is fast enough for Windows 10 and runs Chrome OS as a walk in the park.
Both laptops benefit from 12.3-inch IPS displays running at a resolution of 2400 x 1600 (235 DPI) in a 3: 2 aspect ratio favorable to productivity. Both screens are bright, offer excellent contrast and colors, and are a pleasure to use for work and consumer media.
The Chromebook x2 is very fast for Chrome OS, but the Pixelbook is faster. In terms of performance, Google has stacked the deck and there is no Chromebook yet to keep up.
Portability
The Chromebook x2 offers a battery life of 48 watts / hour, which is not much for a traditional laptop but it's the high end for a tablet. Our aggressive web benchmark test, Basemark, lasted four hours and 23 minutes, an excellent score that promises all-day battery life. It is as slim and light as a 0.33-inch and 1.62-pound tablet, although the weight goes up to 3.07 pounds with the keyboard attached (it's a little heavy, to balance the screen in flapper mode ).
The Pixelbook has a smaller 41-watt-hour battery, which nevertheless managed to power the 2-in-1 for 4 hours and 1:30 in our basic test. It's just a little behind the Chromebook x2, and the Pixelbook has also worked for a whole day, then a few. The Pixelbook measures 0.40 inches thick and weighs 2.4 pounds. It is therefore easier to carry than the HP, unless you leave the keyboard of the latter.
The Chromebook x2 and Pixelbook are highly portable 2-in-1 that can last a long time without being connected. We give the green light to the HP because it is much easier to use want to use the pen to draw or take notes.
The cheapest HP Chromebook x2 has the edge
We had some difficulty placing one or the other of these two great Chrome OS 2s in 1 of superior quality over the other, except in terms of performance. There, the Pixelbook was faster, but the Chromebook x2 was not left out either. Chrome OS does not require as much hardware as Windows 10 or MacOS, and the advantage of the Pixelbook is essentially theoretical at this stage.
But the Chromebook x2 beats the Pixelbook in a crucial area: the price. At $ 580 with the included keyboard and stylus, the HP is significantly cheaper than the original $ 1,000 Pixelbook retail price (although it's often sold for only $ 750). We can not say with certainty that there is a compelling reason to spend more when the Chromebook x2 is likely to meet almost all the needs of Chrome OS users.
