The first paid online service for Nintendo Switch, simply named Nintendo Switch Online, is expected to arrive later this month, and we are still waiting for some important details. A surprise about the service appeared Friday on the official website of Nintendo, and it's not great: there will be limits to the support promised by the cloud backup service.

Nintendo Switch Online's $ 20 a year cost includes the promise of "backing up your data online for easy access" – which for the uninitiated will be the only how to back up saved data from your Switch games when it is launched. Currently, if your Nintendo Switch were to be lost, stolen or damaged, your progress in games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is toast because you can not move backup data from one console to another, or save it to a hard drive.

A member of the community of ResetERA players with eagle eyes noticed Friday that Splatoon 2The new list on Nintendo's official website, for its next "starter pack" version, includes a new warning text: "This game does not support saving Save Data Cloud." It is unclear exactly when this text was published, but a quick Internet search for this exact phrase, limited only to the nintendo.com domain, brings up the same warning for current and upcoming Switch games:

  • Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu
  • Pokemon Let's Go Eevee
  • Remastered Dark Souls
  • Dead cells
  • FIFA 19
  • NBA 2K19
  • NBA Playgrounds

Determining a common factor to these games is difficult, especially since some of them have not yet come out. If online connectivity is a factor, it does not necessarily explain Dead cells& # 39; problem, since the only online option of this independent game is a random download to the "daily challenge". These games also cover the full range of rendering engines, including popular engines such as Unreal and smaller options such as Dead cells& # 39; Heaps fork.

Either way, online action centered on Splatoon 2 seems to be a strange omission for cloud-save support, in terms of working alongside Nintendo Splatoon 2 gameplay servers. Nintendo did not immediately answer our questions about the technical reasons why these games do not support cloud backups. They also did not offer us a full list of press times for the other games involved. We have contacted the developers of the listed games in the hope of getting more information and updating this report if we get a clear answer.

Nintendo was planning one of its "Nintendo Direct" videos this week, which may have revealed more about the paid Switch Online service. However, this video was delayed by the major earthquake that hit Japan this week. The video presentation has yet to be postponed.
