Command & Conquer and Red Alert get remasters

Electronic Arts announced today the remodeling of the original Command & Conquer and Command & Conquer: Red Alert commands, as well as their expansion packs.

EA works in partnership with Petroglyph Games, which brings together many former employees of Commander & Conquer's creator, Westwood Studios, to work on games. Electronic Arts bought Westwood and the Command & Conquer series in 1998. It closed Westwood in 2003. Some employees moved to EA Los Angeles, which continued to work on the franchise. EA Los Angeles is now Dice Los Angeles. Petroglyph Games created the RTS 2006 Star Wars: Empire at War game and the original RTS Gray Goo sci-fi game in 2015.

Command & Conquer was launched for the first time on PC in 1995. It was one of the first major real-time strategy games. While Warcraft, released a year earlier, focuses on a fantastic setting, Command & Conquer has a more contemporary military theme. Red Alert is in another story of the series. Both became their own sub-series in the big franchise, the first getting three direct suites and Red Alert two successors.

The latest Command & Conquer game, Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, was released in 2010. It was a long time for fans of the series, which caused frustration earlier this year when EA announced a mobile game Command & Conquer. Blizzard had a preview of this reaction earlier this month by announcing a mobile game Diablo.

Remastering the classic entries of the series will be a more popular gesture among fans. Real-time strategy games are a rare breed in 2018, but the most popular titles of the genre are regularly updated. Blizzard released StarCraft Remastered in 2017 and announced Warcraft III: Reforged earlier this month.
