Every major video game publisher painstakingly plans their marketing ads by juggling dozens of bureaucratic bullets every time it's time to launch a new trailer or press release. When something interrupts these plans, such as Nintendo's postponing a Nintendo Direct project, weird things can happen. Like three Switch ads strangely delivered, including Final Fantasy XV (Pocket Edition) and Civilization VI.
Yesterday, following a devastating earthquake in Hokkaido, Japan, Nintendo announced that it would indefinitely delay the Nintendo Direct that it had scheduled last night. As a result, some publishers who had already planned ads for the Direct have simply muted these ads. Because for big companies, changing plans can be like trying to reroute an oil tanker.
First, there was the latest news late last night Final Fantasy XVChibi Pocket Edition arrives on the consoles, including Switch. The news took the form of a surprise trailer and console listings on Microsoft and PlayStation stores. The game is currently running on Xbox One and PS4. So it's fair to say that delaying this announcement was not an option, but it seemed a little strange. (The switch version will follow later.)
Capcom also surprised a demo for Mega Man 11 on Switch last night, probably an "outgoing" announcement that was scheduled for the Direct.
And then, this morning, the 2K Games publisher said that Civilization VI just switched to Switch on November 16th. There has been no press release or social media ad – just a listing on Civ's website with an embedded trailer that is not yet online. Almost as if the announcement was not yet supposed to happen.
This is an interesting insight into how a big holder's plan change can have a big impact. Also, whoa, Civilization VI just changed! Damn, yes.
