Diablo: Immortal was one of Blizzard Entertainment's most important announcements during its BlizzCon event today, and a vocal contingent of fans is not thrilled. Although the publisher stated that people should not expect an IV Diablo, many were still disappointed to learn that this branch of the Diablo series reserved for mobile phones. Blizzard addressed some of this skepticism during a question-and-answer session, but the kickback is just beginning.
On the forums, in the YouTube comments and in the Twitch discussions, fans find more and more reasons to justify their anger. This includes the claim that Blizzard and its development partner, NetEase, rely on an existing game and slap Diablo's assets. This game is the old Crusaders of Light role and action game from NetEase.
I contacted Blizzard and NetEase to ask about the relationship between Diablo: Immortal and other NetEase players. But Blizzard provided the following statement to USGamer.
"Blizzard, in partnership with NetEase, has built Diablo Immortal from scratch for iOS / Android."
Fans base the reskin claim on just a few items. For example, the placement of buttons in Crusaders of Light is similar to that of Diablo: Immortal. And the characters in each game have a face. …
Of course, NetEase is a Chinese company and the reputation of this country as bootlegs could also play a role in the perception of fans.
You say "reskin", I say "best practices"
I did not play Diablo: Immortal, so I do not know how it compares to Crusaders of Light. But many fans already seem convinced that this is the case.

Most fans are interested in on-screen controls. And that's because it's the only thing that really looks like a direct copy. But this reasoning is flawed. Think about it. Blizzard works with NetEase, which has experience in creating this type of games. Does not it make sense that both companies have decided to use similar controls because NetEase knows it works? This seems to be the result of best practices in mobile gaming.
Look at the rest of the UI beyond the commands. Nothing else looks like this. Many elements are even in different places.
And even some people think that it does not look like crusaders of light … and rather a different game called Endless of God. And this difference is the point. People think that Diablo: Immortal looks like games that try to look like Diablo games.
Even if it's a reskin, so what?
But let's say that Diablo: Immortal is a reskin. I do not know why it is important. Either the game is good or it's bad. Its quality has nothing to do with whether or not Blizzard slapped his characters and his knowledge of the gameplay of someone else.
If Blizzard took this shortcut, which is common on mobiles, we can always judge results as we would for any other version of Blizzard. If the game is missing from Diablo II or Diablo III or Hearthstone, we can all complain about it. And we could complain no matter what the details of his development.
But if Blizzard and NetEase strive to create a structure that also includes fine controls, progression, and action, as well as great characters and stories, then again: it does not matter.
