Blizzard disappointed its most vocal players at the BlizzCon 2018 earlier this month, failing to announce a fourth main Diablo game, while unveiling a mobile exclusive. Diablo Immortal. It seems however that development on Diablo IV so far, the current version of the game is only planned for two years.
According to a Kotaku report on Diablo franchise and management changes at Blizzard, Diablo's fourth game started as something very different from the previous three of the franchise. After launch issues Diablo III and the cancellation of a second unannounced extension, the development moved to a project that looked more like Dark Souls than other Diablo games.
The game was led by Josh Mosqueira, who ran the Mower of souls expansion, but he eventually separated from Blizzard and the project, codenamed "Hades", was canceled. In its place is the current iteration of Diablo IV, that would look like other titles, but that focuses on darker and more scary images to contrast them with Diablo III. The angle of the camera has not been finalized, but it is currently using the isometric style known to fans. The development of the new version of the game began in 2016 and seems to be going much more smoothly.
Over the years, Diablo III almost turned into a blizzard Skyrim in terms of the number of platforms on which it is installed. Originally released for PC and Mac in 2012, it was later released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, then on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and then on Nintendo Switch just a few weeks ago. The new version, provided as The eternal collection, includes all previously published downloadable content, including Mower of soulsand the game continues to be updated with new content. After more than six years, however, the players are definitely ready for the next chapter, hoping to be released from the hurdles that have affected its predecessor.
In the meantime, maybe Diablo Immortal will prove better than the naysayers predict. The development of the game should not affect the other Diablo games and could perhaps spark even more interest in a franchise that puts quality before quantity for more than ten years.
