As magical as fingerprints on screens or FoDs may seem, they are not so different from their conventional optical sensor counterparts. These are practically just cameras and the real magic lies more in the display that lets the light through. That said, not all FoDs are equal and the first attempt of OnePlus deserves closer inspection. Zack Nelson plunges into the OnePlus 6T to uncover his secrets and note how he might bode well for future under-screen selfie cameras.
As Nelson has already removed the back and the battery when he made the OnePlus 6T transparent mod, the procedure is simplified the second time. The only things that hold him back is the number of Phillips screws that are happily standard. Looking inside reveals two things that are disappointing but not unexpected for the price of the smartphone.
On the one hand, there is no thermal or heat pipe in the OnePlus 6T, unlike many high-end smartphones. Since the smartphone always has the same high-end specifications, we can only hope that this cost-saving measure will not cause the devices to overheat. That said, OnePlus has had no incidents of this type so far, even with its proprietary DASH Charging Charge technology.
The bowels of the OnePlus 6T also do not reveal room for a headphone jack. At least the company did not make a mockery claiming that it had used all the available space for a bigger battery and FoD. This is a sad day for some, but also an opportunity to afford one of the new OnePlus Bullet Helmets.
And finally, we come to the fingerprint scanner itself. Contrary to what you could have imagined, the sensor is completely separated from the screen and the latter can even work without it. The light of the screen does not enter the hole left by the removal of the sensor and only goes out to the user. This, Nelson notes, could give hope that we are not so far from a future where the screens would not have telescopes and that even the front camera would hide under a virtually invisible hole.
