Elder Scrolls Online does not come on Nintendo Switch because it's too big

Elder Scrolls Online was first launched on PC in 2014, before appearing on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One about a year later. But will the MMO ever come on Nintendo Switch? This does not seem likely.

Game Director Matt Firor told GameSpot today at PAX Aus that the developer, ZeniMax Online Studios, was considering integrating the MMO into Nintendo's hybrid console. However, the huge size of the file in the game (Firor says it takes about 75 GB) is one of the reasons this will not happen.

"We thought about Switch but the ESO is a huge game and it just will not work," Firor said. "I'd love it because I love Switch. It's one of the greatest games ever designed and it will not just stand on switch."

For comparison, NBA 2K19 is just under 32 GB for Nintendo Switch, and it is one of the most important games of the switch. Elder Scrolls Online is more than double what might be a problem.

Although ESO does not come on Nintendo Switch, Bethesda had already released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls: Legends for the console.

There is very little MMO on Nintendo Switch, so skipping the ESO console is not so surprising. The Square Enix Dragon Quest X MMO is available on Switch, but only in Japan.

We also discussed with Firor the differences in gaming behavior between PC and console, the popularity of the game today years after its launch, what the announcement of The Elder Scrolls 6 means for ESO and how ZeniMax Online Studios manages the crunch. PAX Aus started today, October 26, and lasts all weekend. GameSpot Theater, the GameSpot Dropbear Theater, will host panels on Fortnite's coverage in mainstream media, featuring actors with actors in The Walking Dead and Fallout 4 from Telltale, and hacking a video game, among other topics. You can see the complete programming of the GameSpot Dropbear Theater here, while a complete list of each PAX Aus panel is available here.
